‘We love our home but our kids think it’s ridiculous’: David Harbour weighs in on divisive reaction to his and Lily Allen’s New York home and admits the ‘tub on carpet’ caused controversy
David Harbour has joked about the ‘controversial’ Architectural Digest photo shoot of his quirky New York home shared with wife Lily Allen.
The Stranger Things star, 47, and the British singer, 37, gave a tour of their incredibly decorated Brooklyn townhouse with the design magazine, with most fans thrilled at the inside scoop of their life together.
Viewers not only loved seeing the stunning home, but also loved seeing the way the couple sweetly interacted with each other.
The pair talked about their kitchen and American actor David revealed singer Lily once said she wanted a ‘plain English kitchen’ in their future home in a ‘bold’ statement while on their first date.
But plenty of people also had things to say about their ‘controversial’ choices within the home, including a bathtub on a carpet, and some complaining that their bedroom had no windows.
Good spirits: David Harbour has joked about the ‘controversial’ Architectural Digest photo shoot of his quirky New York home shared with wife Lily Allen, adding that their kids think ‘it’s ridiculous’ (the pair are pictured in their bathroom with carpet floors)
One fan wrote under Architectural Digest’s post of the new cover: ‘Watched the vídeo today: The KITCHEN is fabulous…The SAUNA too…the rest…a terrible mix of awfull fabrics ,colors and materials what a waste of money!! TERRIBLE!! And a UGLY ROSE BEDROOM with no WINDOWS!!’.
Another added: ‘Sorry, but I felt like a parrot.. I think that this house is not functional. The bedroom without windows!! All in pink. The kitchen area without a toilet … But I really enjoyed their living- bathroom…’
The ‘no windows’ comments seemed to provoke Lily to clarify that her bedroom does actually have windows, with the Smile singer posting a picture with clear arrows pointing to them on her Instagram with over 1.5million followers.
Someone else made mention of the bathroom which had a carpet as the flooring of choice.
‘Maximalism: YES! Carpet in the bathroom: NO,’ they wrote.
Another penned: ‘I think it’s very very British. Carpet in the bathroom sounds odd ? Not if you grew up or lived in England. I think it’s maybe a bit too much for ad readers but house and garden readers will love it ( just a guess).’
Similarly, someone else wrote: ‘Love the house but can’t wrap my head around wall-to-wall carpet in the bathroom!!!!’
‘Stunning, but I’ll never be onboard with carpet in a bath area. Everything else was sensational’, a fourth said.

Incredible: Lily and David gave fans a tour of their luxury Brooklyn townhouse that they have just renovated with the help of AD100 designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff of MADE. Pictured is their green ‘garden room’
She said: ‘That would be quite bold on a first date, like, ”nice to meet you, by the way, English is the name of the kitchen.”
David laughed and then sweetly said: ‘I liked it, I kind of liked it, I was like, ”alright, let’s do this!”

Loving it: Viewers flocked to Instagram to comment underneath Architectural Digest’s clip
In the clip, they showed off their eye-catching tiger-print media room, their luxury kitchen inspired by The Godfather, their floral Parisian-inspired rooms and a stunning walk-in wardrobe filled with designer goods.
On the bottom floor, the pair created a quirky media room complete with tiger-print carpet and a matching lounge.
‘This is wild, the brain child of my wife,’ David says in the clip.
Lily said the room is ‘relaxing’ and said the pair watch movies and TV in the area, which leads to their backyard that features a sauna and a cold plunge pool.
Off the media room is even a black toilet, which David admitted was his idea.
Italian-inspired: However, one of the most impressive rooms is the luxurious and oversized kitchen (pictured), which David said he designed with The Godfather in mind
Marital home: The pair got married in September 2020 in Las Vegas, and have offered a glimpse at their martial home after renovating the property
However, one of the most impressive rooms is the luxurious and oversized kitchen, which David said was designed with the iconic film The Godfather in mind.
‘It’s a layered Italian design theme, based a little on The Godfather movies, this neighbourhood in Brooklyn is an old Italian neighbourhood and we liked the idea of incorporating that aesthetic,’ he said.
‘My priority for this room is I just wanted the light to be bouncing off the walls. It feels very luxurious, warm and functional,’ Lily said.
The kitchen features cream cabinetry, an oversized island bench, a range cooker, a dining table and lounge as well as an oversized chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
Picturesque: In their luxurious home, Lily and David also have a lavish loungeroom they call the ‘garden room’, with designer wallpaper and green velvet furnishings
In their luxurious home, Lily and David also have a lavish loungeroom they call the ‘garden room’.
The room is complete with a green lick of paint, floral designer wallpaper and a velvet green sofa.
‘We have this double sided sofa so we can argue and look at each other relaxing at the same time,’ Lily said with a laugh.
One of their bathrooms continues the floral theme, with blue walls and quirky pink accents including a matching fridge.
David also had gold swan taps installed and commode cabinets that they bought at auction, inspired by similar accents they saw at Versailles.
The actor admitted that they wanted a ‘Parisian feeling’ in the room, leading Lily to add: ‘You wanted florals and they delivered for you baby.’
Every woman’s dream! Lily then showed off her incredible closet, which was filled with designer including Chanel bags, describing it as ‘functional and very beautiful’
In a quirky touch, Lily also joked about the embroidered print they have in the room which is of ‘sexually transmitted diseases’.
‘You’ve had that since I’ve known you, it’s amazing by the way,’ he said.
The pair then showed off their windowless pink bedroom, which had a vintage and retro feel.
Lily said her actor father Keith Allen bought her the flamingo artwork that now hangs above her and David’s pink bed.
Looking good! Lily previously explained how important her home is to her, and particularly her kitchen, as she commenced work on the property
‘David, he’s a vampire so we close these doors and he can sleep or watch TV to 2pm in the afternoon,’ she said with a laugh.
‘It’s cool when you design a room with no windows… you make the bedroom just a place for couple activities… you make it like a cocoon almost,’ David said.
Lily then showed off her incredible closet, which was filled with designer including Chanel bags.
‘It’s very functional and very beautiful and I’m very happy,’ she said.
There is also a vanity mirror and seat if Lily wants to get ready and do her makeup in the closet.
