Stranger Things star David Harbour has revealed what pushed him to tie the knot with British singer Lily Allen last September.

In a hilarious account about the decision, he revealed her two daughters Marnie, eight, and Ethel, nine, had driven him to wed the star when they described him as: ‘Just some guy in our lives’ – a label he wanted removed.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night, the actor, 46, stated that the wise girls had made him realise he ‘needed’ to marry Lily.

David and Lily, 36, who shares her two daughters with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, became engaged just before COVID-19 hit.

He explained: ‘We were riding around beginning of pandemic and we were riding bikes out in the country trying to figure out what we were gonna do for the next year or however long it was going to take…

‘And the little one was riding along and she was going like, ‘David, dad, David, dad.’ Because the D got her confused. And the older one got very upset with that, which I understand. She was like, ‘He’s not our dad! He’s not our dad!” 

‘And then younger one was like, ‘Well what is he? He’s kind of our dad.’ She’s like, ‘No he’s not, he’s our stepdad.’ And she goes, ‘What is he?’ And she goes, ‘He’s just some guy in our lives!”

David said: ‘I was like, “I need to marry this woman”… Because the emotional fallout. That’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever been called. ‘Just some guy in our lives.’ 9 years old going on 35. ‘Just some guy in our lives.’ ” 

The couple travelled to Vegas where they acquired a marriage license and the following day they exchanged vows with an Elvis impersonator officiating.

Lily’s daughters divide their time between her and David, and their dad Sam from whom the singer was divorced in 2018 after seven years of marriage.

Meanwhile, David will return as Sheriff Jim Hopper for a fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. 

At the end of the third season, it was teased that the character had not died after all but was instead an inmate in a Russian prison.

Filming started up again in October and the actor told Kimmel: ‘I’m almost done. We’ve got one more little stint. We should be done in like August.

He added that he’ll have to shave his head again for his role as Hopper and that fans might, just might, get to see the new season by the end of the year.
