Michael Greco delightedly revealed the news that his newborn son was finally being discharged from hospital seven weeks after his birth.

Last month, the former EastEnders star and his partner Helen Harris' son Gianluca was born prematurely with a condition called Gastroschisis, a type of abdominal wall defect that required him to undergo lifesaving surgery.

And taking to Instagram on Wednesday to share a positive update, 50 year old Michael explained that the youngster was finally making his way home from the ICU unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

"Hi everyone, thank you so much for all your support over the last seven really tough weeks," the soap star began.

He added: "I've just had the most incredible news from the doctors that my boy is being discharged today. He's made an incredible recovery so soon, so strong.

"And I've just arrived at the hospital to take him home. So, thank you all so much for all your well wishes and incredible support. Great day."

Earlier this month, Michael thanked his followers for their well-wishes, writing in an Instagram post that he was "overwhelmed by how many of you have contacted me about the welfare of my beautiful baba Gianluca."

Michael added: "Probably the hardest few weeks of my life, but we are so in love with this beautiful, strong boy, and nothing else really matters right now.

"Once again I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support."

Sadly, earlier pregnancy scans had failed to pick up on the little boy's condition, and it was only when he was born prematurely that the issues came to light.

Michael played the hunky Beppe on EastEnders from 1998 to 2002, and had several critically acclaimed storylines alongside his on-screen brother Giovanni.

When the star announced the happy news that Helen was pregnant, former co-stars and friends in the industry were overjoyed, taking to his Instagram comments to share their well-wishes for the actor.
