Elvis Presley's Fiancée Never Saw Him Eat a Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich

Throughout his career, fans were fascinated with Elvis Presley. One of the things the singer was known for was his love of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. The famed sandwiches have become staples at restaurants thanks to Presley.

Ginger Alden was engaged to Presley until his death in August 1977. Despite the fact it was claimed to be one of his favorite meals, Alden once said she never saw Presley eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich in the months that they were together.

Elvis Presley reportedly loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches

In 2002, CNN reported about Presley’s favorite meals and restaurants in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn. At Elvis Presley’s Memphis Restaurant on Beale Street, fans could order the famous peanut butter and banana sandwich.

“Everybody recognizes that about Elvis,” Jennifer Dorman, sales manager of Elvis Presley’s Memphis Restaurant, told CNN. “He’s known for [the sandwich]. You’ve got to try it.”

According to CNN, Presley also loved eating “barbecue sandwiches, barbecue pizzas, mash potatoes, peas, apple pie and meatloaf — the latter which he sometimes ate for weeks, even months, in a row.”

Ginger Alden never saw Elvis Presley eat the famous sandwich

On Sept. 2, 2014, Alden published a memoir titled Elvis & Ginger: Elvis Presley’s Fiancée and Last Love Finally Tells Her Story. The memoir details her life with Presley, and in 2014 Alden was interviewed about the book by Smashing Interviews Magazine.

In the interview, Alden revealed that she never actually saw Presley eat the famous peanut butter and banana sandwich, saying:

“There are exaggerations like Elvis wasn’t happy his last year, was depressed, sitting up there eating fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches (which I never once saw him eat one of those the nine months I was with him), that we argued all the time and that I hated touring. There are multiple swirling untruths, and I think people will see a difference when they read the book.”

Why Ginger Alden decided to write a book

After Presley’s death in 1977, Alden waited decades to publish a book about her relationship with him. Once her son went to college, Alden dedicated her time to writing a book.

“I didn’t want to lose time with my son,” she told Smashing Interviews Magazine. “I didn’t have any interest in doing a book, but with so much hearsay, fabrications and untruths swirling around out there, it was difficult, but like I said, I waited, and I raised my son.”

With so many rumors surrounding Presley’s lifestyle, health, and death, Alden wanted to do her part and remind fans that Presley was a human being first.

“It would mean a great deal if a person could walk away after reading and say, ‘Wow! Elvis was human,’” she said. “We all are. He had good days and bad days, but above it all, he was looking forward to many things. I tried to write about his generosity and how he cared so deeply for so many people.”
