Emmerdale actress Maya Stepney, who was cast to play the evil child groomer Maya Stepney, revealed she has received abuse for playing the character in the shocking 2019 storyline. Referencing one incident in particular, a member of the public spouted a vile insult  at her while she was shopping with her young son and had to try and react appropriately in front of her child.

Her character, a teacher, had a relationship with 15-year-old Jacob Gallagher, played by Joe-Warren Plant, while she was dating his dad David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden).

The storyline sickened viewers to the core as young Jacob fell head over heels in love with the paedophile before she was found out, arrested, suspended from her job, and carted off in handcuffs.

But it seems she played the part a little too well, as fans of the show are having a hard time differentiating the ITV drama from real life.

In a new interview, Louisa admitted: “I did have a situation where I was with my little son, who was two.

“I was in a shop and someone came up to me and went, ‘You are such a b**ch.'”

Shocked and taken aback, the actress had to hide her upset as she tried to rectify the situation calmly.

“I was like, ‘You know it’s not real?

“‘I’m with my son and he just thinks some strange lady has come up to me and said something mean.'”

She continued to tell The Sun: “I’ve had a few slightly older, unattractive men shouting at me, going, ‘Oh I’m too old for you!’

“My response is usually that it’s not your age that’s the problem here.”

Following Maya’s incarceration, she later made a comeback in 2020 in a dramatic shock baby twist, but ITV bosses confirmed it wouldn’t be permanent move amid public outcry on social media with viewers not wanting to revisit the appalling plot again.

But it was such a big secret that even the cast and crew were not allowed in on it.

Speaking to the Soap From The Box podcast, she said nobody else knew about her brief return and that it was a “top secret” agenda.

“It wasn’t on any call sheets, they had taken it out of the scripts,” Louisa explained.

“We had no crew, so the director was operating the camera, there was one make-up, one costume person and the producer was the assistant director.”

She also revealed that her return scenes were filmed when everyone else had finished, to ensure absolutely no one knew.

“I got a phone call saying that I could come in now because so and so had left the building,” the actress chuckled.

“I was a bit frightened of not keeping it a secret because if it had got out, they would have known it was me and I would have been in so much trouble!”
