Nicholas Donnelly has died, his family has announced.
The actor, who was most well known for portraying the character of Mr MacKenzie in Grange Hill for eight years, passed away at the age of 83.
His family released a statement, which read: "He was a gracious, kind and lovely man, a wonderful father and grandfather.
“He was also very funny and brilliant at telling stories, acting out all the characters, marvellous company and a privilege to know.
“He loved nothing more than offering hospitality and making people feel welcome.”
A fan account for Grange Hill also shared the news on Twitter as they posted a photo of the star before writing: "It is my very sad duty to inform you that Nicholas Donnelly who played Mr MacKenzie sadly passed away this morning. RIP xxxx".
Tributes have poured in from fans since the news broke. One shared: "Ahh Mr McKenzie – I remember him. Rest in peace #NicholasDonnelly from #GrangeHill," followed by a sad face emoji.
Another penned: "Sad to hear that lovely Nicholas Donnelly has passed away. I was honoured to interview him for the Dixon of Dock Green 3 DVD. He was a warm, charming man and a very strong actor. A really important part of the Dixon family. My thoughts are with his family. RIP Nick #legend".
While a third added: "The school bell has stopped ringing for Mr MacKenzie. RIP to Nicholas Donnelly, a very good actor."
The actors colleagues were also quick to share their tributes as Karen Lewis said: "This is so sad. I worked with him during my time on Grange Hill. He was the most delightful man. A gentleman and a true professional. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Nicholas."
While Ricky Simmonds shared: "Nicholas was a true pro and a lovely man to work with. RIP."

Nicholas started his acting career in Carry on Sergeant back in 1958 and it wasn't long before he made a name for himself in the film industry.
He went on to star in BBC police series Dixon Of Dock Green as Sergeant Johnny Wills from 1960 to 1976 – another role for which he is known for.
His career went from strength to strength as he starred in Grange Hill and then The Bill.
