Jim Carrey's Goal During Retirement Is to Become 'Frighteningly Normal'

TL;DR:

  • Jim Carrey recently announced that he’d like to retire from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • In a follow-up interview, Jim Carrey revealed that he wants to focus on everything he’s ignored in life and become a “frighteningly normal” person.
  • The comedian said he’d only leave retirement if a “script that’s written in gold ink” came along.

Jim Carrey has spent four decades delivering award-winning comedy stylings in hit movies like Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, and more. Now, he’s ready to settle down in a simple, quiet life. In late March, while discussing his new film Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the actor revealed that he’s ready to take an acting break. In a follow-up to his statement, Carrey later shared what he strives to accomplish in his retirement: “un-exceptionalism.” Here’s more on the actor’s retirement plans.

Jim Carrey recently said he’s ‘fairly serious’ about retirement after a long acting career

Carrey’s career dates back to the early ’80s, when he took on roles in various TV movies and shows. Since then, his career has skyrocketed thanks to hits like Bruce Almighty, Ace Ventura, The Mask, and more. In addition to comedies, Carrey’s work has also taken him into more dramatic roles for films like Man on the Moon and The Truman Show. Most recently, he reprised his role as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel.

During a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 interview with Access Hollywood, Carrey dropped the bomb that he wants to retire. Instead of acting, he’d like to focus on spirituality and his artwork.

“I really love my spiritual life,” he said. “[And] I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Carrey didn’t mention if he’d want to take a temporary acting break or a permanent retirement. However, it wouldn’t be the first time he stepped away from the business. He previously spent a few years on hiatus before taking on a role in 2018’s Kidding TV series.

Jim Carrey wants to become ‘frighteningly normal’ when he retires

So, what does Carrey wish to do in his retirement? Pretty much nothing. In a follow-up interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Liar Liar star said he’d like to take time to focus on all the “important things” he’s ignored over the years.

“Like, there’s 25 years of Mystery Science Theater I have to catch up on. And there’s painting. I do paint. I’m gonna be putting out NFTs. I’ll announce that on Twitter soon. And that’s kinda fun for me still,” he said.

At the end of the day, Carrey said he’s aiming for “un-exceptionalism.”

“I want to be frighteningly normal. Nothing going on. Whole lotta nothing,” he added.

There’s 1 thing that could possibly pull the actor out of retirement

It seems the 60-year-old actor would be pretty set in his retirement. However, Carrey did tell Access Hollywood that he’d consider going back to Hollywood on one condition.

“If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might … continue down the road. But I’m taking a break,” he explained.

Surprisingly, Dolly Parton might just be the one to hand Carrey that golden opportunity. The country legend recently shared that she’s working on having a biopic made, and she’d love Carrey to star as her music partner, Porter Wagoner. In response to Parton’s comment, Carrey said he’d “always speak” to her.

“Dolly’s just, to me, an otherworldly talent that is just bigger than you can imagine,” he said in his interview.

For now, Jim Carrey’s fans can see him one last time before retirement in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, now playing in theaters.
