Free Guy follows Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller who realises he is a background player in an open-world video game, prompting him to re-write himself as the ‘good guy.’

Reynolds’ character Guy goes about what he sees as normal daily life in a city riddled with absolute chaos (bank heists, people crashing through windows), until Jodie’s character Milly unlocks the truth about the simulation that he has been living in all along.

After she reveals the reality of his situation, Guy is determined to re-write his own destiny as the hero of the world, and they take on the city together — eventually striking up a romantic connection.

The star-studded cast also includes Stranger Things’ Joe Keery and Taika Waititi as the game-world’s mastermind. The Twentieth Century Studios’ production is set for release on August 13.

When Waititi’s ‘God-like’ character Antoine, gets wind of Guy’s knowledge, he is determined to destroy both him and the world he’s created which has been dubbed ‘Free City.’

And in typical video-game style, the film features tons of special effects and graphic text bubbles, including various game style ‘missions’ that pop up on screen, and even ‘brutality bonuses’ for inflicting pain.

The story was developed by Matt Lieberman (Playing With Fire) and Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and the film was shot in Boston in 2019.

In a set visit interview with Screen Rant, director Shawn Levy described the film’s premise (beneath the big-budget gaming effects) as a story about coming into oneself and also shared that it was inspired in some ways by the world of Grand Theft Auto and other games.

‘It’s about his slow awakening to consciousness regarding his world, his identity and the potential of both,’ Levy said.

He continued to say it was also about ‘slow empowerment,’ and chalked it up to a ‘superhero origin story’ of sorts.

‘In a video game world where anything is possible, if you became aware of the artifice of your world, you might be capable of anything. So it’s about the slow empowerment.

‘From day one, we talked about that this is in some ways a superhero origin story minus the IP of a superhero, because he’s just a real guy who slowly realises he might have a power in his life beyond what he thought.’
