Jodie Comer’s winning streak continued at the Tony Awards on Sunday evening.
Supported by her brother Charlie in the audience, the 30-year-old fought back tears as she scooped Best Lead Actress in a Play for her one-woman show Prima Facie at the 76th ceremony held at the United Palace in New York City.
But Jodie’s big moment was comically marred when presenter Marcia Gay Harden accidentally called her ‘Julie Comer’ when announcing the winner.
The Killing Eve actress brushed off the awkward mishap and was emotional by the win as the camera panned in on her as her proud brother gave a congratulatory home.
Marcia quickly corrected herself and told the audience: ‘I don’t have my glasses on!’
Jodie made her Broadway debut earlier this year, after Prima Facie had a successful stint in the West End with the actress bagging a Evening Standard Theatre Award and a Laurence Olivier Award.

Woops: But Jodie’s big moment was comically marred when presenter Marcia Gay Harden accidentally called her ‘Julie Comer’ when announcing the winner
She plays a criminal defense attorney known for defending men accused of sexual assault whose faith in the law is shaken when she becomes a victim of the same crime in the one-woman play.
Jodie beat nominees A Doll’s House’s Jessica Chastain, Summer, 1976’s Jessica Hecht, and Ohio State Murders’ Audra McDonald.
And the actress didn’t let the name mix-up deter her from giving an emotional and moving speech.
She noted how her character Tessa had inspired the crowds who flocked to her show, which she noted still has three weeks left of its run.
‘This woman and this play have been my greatest teacher,’ Comer said as she accepted her award. ‘To every person who feels represented by Tessa, this has been my greatest honour.’
Afterwards, viewers flocked to social media to poke fun at Harden calling her ‘Julie’.
‘Come on Marcia Gay Harden! Butchering Tony Award winner Jodie Comer’s name, and then saying “I’m not wearing my glasses,”‘ complained one person, who added a gif reading ‘Do Better.’
Another said Harden was forgiven, possibly due to her statement in favor of the LGBTQ community before presenting the award.
One user attributed he mixup to the lack of a script and posted in favor of the WGA: ‘PAY THE WRITERS!!!’

Another joked that Harden had her ‘Adele Dazeem moment,’ referencing John Travolta’s infamous mispronunciation of Idina Menzel’s name at the 2014 Academy Awards.
Jodie looked stunning in a glittering black strapless floor-length dress for the evening, while Charlie, who is a Data Analyst, cut a dapper figure in black suit and bow tie.
The award is a pivotal moment in Jodie’s career as Prima Facie is her Broadway debut.
The show started out at the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End before moving to New York, with Jodie receiving critical acclaim.
In a review of the production, The Daily Mail said: ‘Comer plays a Liverpudlian, working-class criminal defence barrister. She is natty, sharp and expert at getting men off sexual assault charges, using all sorts of cunning ploys to woo the jury or clobber a witness.’
While The Guardian said of the play’s messages, ‘there is power in hearing them spoken on a West End stage, and Comer manages to infuse breath-taking emotional drama in every last word’.
The show has been extended on Broadway to run until July 2 following its success.
It follows Jodie’s success on screen as Russian assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve.
The actress won a British Academy Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2019 after being nominated for three gongs respectively. She also won a BAFTA for her drama Help which followed a care worker during the pandemic.
Last year, it was announced that Comer will star in and produce a limited series adaptation of Jen Beagin’s novel Big Swiss for HBO.
The project will be produced by A24 and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries.
She is also committed to star in and produce the environmental thriller The End We Start From, an adaptation of Megan Hunter’s debut novel directed by Mahalia Belo.
