John Legend apologises for 'elevating' former prosecutor amid sex assault claims

John Legend has apologised for previously ‘elevating’ former prosecutor Adam Foss, as he’s now under investigation for sexual assault.

The All Of Me hitmaker apologised to all the women Foss has allegedly ‘harmed’ and claimed the former prosecutor used his association to ‘gain credibility’.

Legend wrote on Twitter: ‘In 2015 we (my org @freeamerica, @tystiklorius and I) helped elevate Adam John Foss and the concept of progressive prosecutors. I later learned that he used his platform to harm women.

‘He used my name and association to gain credibility, and while we are committed to a world where people’s lives aren’t defined by their mistakes, it’s unacceptable to use one’s power and influence to harm women.

‘We are so sorry to all of the women he has harmed.’

In 2015, Legend and his organisation Free America, which works to end mass incarceration, worked on a public awareness campaign about criminal prosecutors.

Foss was one of the ‘progressive prosecutors’ the campaign shone a light on.

Since, Foss has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women. He has denied the allegations.

In November, District Attorney Rachael Rollins shared a lengthy statement on social media and said an outside law firm had been retained to investigate the claims.

She added on social media: ‘I am aware of and troubled by the allegations that a former SCDAO employee engaged in behaviour that was either inappropriate, an abuse of his authority, unethical or illegal. Every allegation will be investigated fairly and thoroughly.’

Foss shared a statement, telling WBUR News: ‘I have seen social media posts alleging improper conduct in my past.

‘I recognise that some of my callous and insensitive behaviour has caused many people anguish, but I deny any allegations of nonconsensual sexual relations [sic].

‘With respect to District Attorney Rachael Rollins’ recent statement referencing a pending investigation, I do not wish to compromise that process by commenting further.

‘In addition, this is a more appropriate time for me to listen than to speak.’
