King Charles will reportedly hold a summit with the Prince and Princess of Wales and Camilla to outline his plans for the future of the monarchy.
According to sources, central to the King's plans will be to use Kate and William's "star quality" in a bid to keep the Commonwealth together.
It is thought he will nail down precise roles for himself and Queen Camilla as well as for the Prince and Princess of Wales in the summit which is due to be held at Balmoral Castle where the King is due to arrive on Monday.
A source told The Mirror: "His Majesty is very clear. The Commonwealth must be at the very heart of his reign. He sees it as his utmost duty to fulfil the sincere wish of his late mother, that one of his central roles must be to ensure not only the survival but the robustness (of the organisation)."
Within the summit, King Charles will reveal his objectives for the future direction of the monarchy which will involve foreign travel, engagements and key aims.
Speaking of his son and daughter-in-law's role in the future of the Crown, the source said the King sees them as "being at the heart of cementing their own future and that of the monarchy at large."
Sources close to the matter say the King is keen to capitalise on their increasing popularity and "star quality."
William has been voted top of a respected poll of Americans’ favourite global figures which indicates it might not be a bad time to capitalise on the global popularity he holds.
Later this year, the King and Queen will travel to Kenya on an official visit. This will inevitably evoke images of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, being in the country on the day her father King George VI passed away which made her Queen at the age of just 25.
A senior civil servant told The Mirror of Charles: "(he) hopes to use the symbolism tied into his mother’s legacy to offer a hand of friendship, which might get harder as the years go by."
In line with the Foreign and Commonwealth office as well, Charles has reportedly made plans to visit Canada and Australia next year.
Despite growing calls for republicanism across parts of the Commonwealth, King Charles will tell his summit that the major Commonwealth realms must be brought closer to Britain.
This comes off the back of a nightmare tour to the Caribbean for the Prince and Princess of Wales last year. Sources suggest the pair will be on the charm offensive at carefully chosen destinations next time round.
The government insider said: "The Caribbean tour wasn’t a complete catastrophe, but it was a massive wake-up call. Simply turning up with a wave and a smile and a speech of friendship will not work any more."
Officials are hopeful that William’s role in understanding and acknowledging the contribution made by the Windrush generation to Britain will help dialogue with communities in the Caribbean and beyond.
