Madonna transforms into the Virgin Mary and recreates scenes from The Last Supper as she graces cover of Vanity Fair’s Icon Issue after 40th anniversary tour announcement

Madonna transformed into the Virgin Mary as she graced the cover of Vanity Fair’s first-ever Icon Issue.

The singer, 64, donned an extravagant Dolce & Gabbana headpiece along with a dark veil for the project, a collaboration between the French, Italian and Spanish editions of the magazine.

The Queen of Pop, who recently announced a 40th anniversary tour, also recreated the painting of The Last Supper for the daring shoot.

Madonna’s veil featured gold embroidery while she had tears streaming down her face in the regal shot.

For The Last Supper image, she wore a cream pleated dress under bright red robes while surrounded by a group of women.

In a racier look, the star wore a bronze corset along with a pair of dark tights and a floral headpiece as she held hands with a male model.

In a fourth black and white shot, Madonna appeared to be suspended by a rope while surrounded by bullfights.

‘In this very special issue, Madonna becomes Madonna again: an icon. Not just the embodiment of a musical trend or a style of dress, but a figure as disturbing as she is sacred,’ Olivier Bouchara, Head of Editorial Content for Vanity Fair France, said in a statement.

During the interview, Madonna said: ‘This is a good time for me — I’m gathering ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching films, seeing art, listening to music.’

Madonna recently announced a 40th anniversary Celebration tour, taking in 35 dates across North America and Europe.

Produced by Live Nation, the tour will kick off in North America on July 15th at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC with stops in Detroit, Chicago, New York, Miami, Los Angeles.

The Celebration Tour will wrap in Amsterdam, NL on Friday, December 1st at Ziggo Dome.

The shows will take audiences on Madonna’s artistic journey through four decades and pay respect to the city of New York where her career in music began.

Madonna said: ‘I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.’

On the road: The announcement won’t come as a surprise to some, as it had previously been reported Madonna was planning her first ever Greatest Hits tour

The Celebration Tour will offer a one-of-a-kind experience with special guest Bob the Drag Queen a.k.a. Caldwell Tidicue across all dates on the global tour.

Tickets go on sale starting Friday, January 20th at 10am local time at madonna.com/tour.

Madonna’s previous tour saw her perform at significantly smaller theatre venues, but for this Greatest Hits tour she is expected to take to the stage and huge stadiums.

Last year, Madonna hinted that she was ready to get back on the road and tour again, telling Variety: ‘I want to go on tour again, I’m a creature of the stage. That is my happy place.’
