Madonna has been slammed by fans for saying she ‘did it first’ in a comment about Lil Nas X’s kiss with his male backing dancer at the BET Awards on Sunday.

The 22-year-old rapper was praised for the bold move during the music ceremony, but Madonna was keen to claim that she had done the same thing when she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV VMAs in 2003.

However, the 62-year-old star immediately caught backlash from fans, calling her ‘the queen of queerbaiting’ and accused her of ‘appropriating’ New York City’s African-American and Latino LGBTQ drag ball culture scene from the 1980s.

Lil Nas X has since responded to the controversy saying he and Madonna are ‘friends’ but that hasn’t stopped the intense reaction on social media.

‘White women kissing on a public platform as you did at the 2003 VMAs is hardly as revolutionary as Black queer men doing so,’ Diet Prada captioned an Instagram post.

The post added: ‘Need we remind you that you also appropriated vogueing/ballroom culture and built a legacy on top of a foundation that Black queer and trans folk laid?’

Lil Nas X, real name Montero Lamar Hill, had been bombarded with homophobic abuse following his performance – and many appeared to be angry that Madonna felt the need to claim ownership over the rapper’s groundbreaking same-sex kiss.

‘Why does it even matter if she “did it first” bro, Lil Nas X is black and gay that’s gonna be more impactful and revolutionary than a straight white lady,’ another tweet read.

Oh dear: Madonna’s kiss was labelled ‘queerbaiting’ after she tried to compare hers to Lil Nas X

Another Twitter user wrote: ‘That Madonna post really p****d me off. She’s a white heterosexual woman who capitalised off a lesbian fantasy. Did so while being established and sharing any/all backlash with two other megastars. Lil Nas X, did THAT all on his own, while still climbing the ladder.’

Dressed as an Egyptian pharaoh while performing his single Montero (Call Me By Your Name), the rapper kissed one of his male dancers in front of a televised audience promoting a strong reaction on social media.

Journalist Tom Knight tweeted: ‘When Britney, Christina and Madonna kissed at the VMAs people went wild. Apparently it’s ‘harmless fun’ when it’s women or straight people, but really not acceptable if it’s gay men. This happened to Adam Lambert in 2009 and now Lil Nas X. We’re sick of the hypocrisy #Pride.’

However, the rapper attempted to diffuse the controversy on Wednesday, tweeting: ‘me and madonna are friends. it’s just a joke.’

Friends? The rapper attempted to diffuse the controversy on Wednesday, tweeting: ‘me and madonna are friends. it’s just a joke’

But unlike Madonna’s kiss with Britney and Christina, Lil Nas X was hit with homophobic abuse following his performance, which he reacted to on Twitter.

He tweeted: ‘y’all hate yourselves so much. y’all live your lives trying your best to appease straight ppl. y’all are uncomfortable with what i do because y’all are afraid they will be uncomfortable with you, work on yourselves, i love who i am and whatever i decide to do. get there.’

He also explained: ‘it took me a lot of time to mentally prepare for this performance. while on stage i was trembling knowing that i was performing something like that in front of my straight peers. even during the performance i was having a hard time calming my nerves. thank you guys for the love.’

Meanwhile, others criticized Madonna for references the performance with Britney, without acknowledging her recent struggles with one fan tweeting: ‘Madonna could post herself kissing Britney but not free Britney.’
