Homes Under The Hammer has boosted Martin Roberts, 56, into the spotlight, as the DIY expert has featured on a range of shows away from the BBC property program during his 18-year stint on camera. He’s appeared on the likes of Celebrity Mastermind, Masterchef and Pointless, and even did a turn in the I’m A Celebrity jungle in 2016.

Actually considered smuggling some into the jungle but didn’t

During his weekly Twitter Q&A, the presenter looked back on his stretch in the Australian wilderness and confessed he was actually planning on smuggling in a forbidden item.

One fan strayed away from the property related questions and asked Martin: “As a man with impeccable taste, and a fan of rouge chinos I don’t doubt, what is your number 1 condiment?

“All other condiments are destroyed forever…” they joked.

After having a think, the host came back to the viewer and dropped a little backstage gossip in the mix, too.

“Salt! Unfortunately, I use far too much of it,” he admitted.

“Actually considered smuggling some into the jungle but didn’t.”

Martin was eliminated after spending 15 days in camp, coming in sixth place.

The presenter caused quite a stir during his time in the jungle, with his most notable bust up with EastEnders actor Larry Lamb.

The pair were at each others throats throughout the entirety of their time together, with Martin accusing Larry of being a “bully”.

But once the show was over, it appeared they had out the bad blood to bed as Martin revealed he gave his TV nemesis a hug which reduced Larry to tears.

Speaking on This Morning after he was voted out, Martin said: “After we finished filming, I saw Larry with his new lady and I thought, I need to do something because I knew it was probably the last time I’d ever see him.

“So I grabbed him and I just hugged him and said ‘This is a real hug’. And do you know what he did? He broke down and started crying.

“He kept telling me he was so sorry for the way he acted in the jungle and all the things he said. And I accepted his apology.”

“It was a really difficult time for me,” he added.

“Larry did not treat me as fairly as I would have liked. Hopefully everyone has now seen that.

“At first, I was really angry about it all but now, I look back at my overall experience and I see it as a positive and amazing one. I am proud of myself.”

But getting back to what he knows best, Martin also revealed what he dislikes most about Homes Under The Hammer.

Since the show first launched in 2003, there’s been a lot to admire.

But being on a TV show for that long, viewers wondered if Martin had many dislikes, as well.

They penned: “Hi Martin, what do you dislike the most about HUTH if it appropriate to say?”

After a little think and nothing sprung to mind, the presenter replied: “Only the traveling to get to the locations and the blasted 50 mph roadworks on the motorways.”

Homes Under The Hammer airs weekdays at 10am on BBC One.
