Olivia Colman played solicitor Alex Smallbone in British sitcom Rev. from 2010 to 2014. The Oscar-winning actress auditioned for the role almost a decade before scooping the prestigious acting accolade for her part in The Favourite.

The 47-year-old starred opposite Tom Hollander, who played her Reverend husband Adam in the series, which ran for three seasons.

Kenton Allen, who produced the show, has now revealed that he was moved to tears when he first saw the actress at work.

He said she was able to transform into character right before his eyes in an instant.

Being able to evoke an emotional response was a mark of a “true genius,” said the Chief Executive of Big Talk Productions.

During the audition process Kenton was reading out the other parts in the script alongside the actors.

Recalling the moment, which occurred in the presence of the casting director, he said Olivia was very “giggly” to begin with.

However, she quickly got down to business when required.

“Olivia came in – and the thing about her is that you want to be her best friend the moment you meet her – you want her to like you,” he began.

“We started reading.

“It was a comedy scene with a bit of pathos, and she sat down ever so giggly, polite and fun then suddenly starts the scene, transforms into this no-b******t defence lawyer and I swear I was in floods of tears.

“She found this emotional rhythm, truth and honesty and I was weeping.

“I don’t know how she does it, but it’s the mark of true genius,” he told this week’s Radio Times.

Ahead of the release of the third series, Olivia said she wasn’t at all surprised by the massive reaction to the show.

“You get kind of a gut feeling when you first read a script. I really liked it.

“…So the fact that other people really liked it too then, yay!”

“It’s because it’s well written, it’s beautiful and the people are loveable and flawed,” she said during a BBC interview.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Olivia was in talks to join a Marvel TV series.

Variety claimed that she was in negotiations to star in Disney Plus’ Secret Invasion.

Other cast members include Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

The programme is not likely to air until the end of 2022 at the earliest.
