Piers Morgan fuming as Mr and Mrs Potato head 'go gender neutral'

Piers Morgan has lashed out at ‘spineless’ toy makers after it was announced that Mr Potato Head is now gender neutral.

The spud – who was brought to life in 1996 flick Toy Story, voiced by Don Rickles – has been on shelves for around 70 years.

However, makers Hasbro decided to give the range a modern makeover, announcing Mr and Mrs Potato Head will now be known as ‘Potato Head’ – with the update coming into effect later this year.

Piers was left furious at the news, and took to Instagram to share a screenshot of an article discussing the change.

Having none of it, the 55-year-old spat: ‘FFS. Imagine doing this in the middle of a global pandemic because you’re terrified of offending a few wokies…

‘So spineless and depressing.’

Hasbro confirmed the move today, with a statement on the official website reading: ‘Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr from the Mr Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion.

‘In the fall, the new Potato Family Pack “Create Your Potato Head Family” will celebrate the many faces of families allowing kids to imagine and create their own Potato Head family.

‘The name change will come with a fresh branding look with a whimsical colour palette and more inclusive messaging along with new product to appeal to the modern consumer.

‘The possibilities to create your own families are endless with mixing and mashing all the parts and pieces.’

Speaking about the move, Hasbro Senior Vice President Kimberly Boyd explained that the current toys were in need of a modern makeover.

‘Culture has evolved. Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences,’ she told told Fast Company.

‘The way the brand currently exists – with the Mr and Mrs – is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure.’

But a tweet from the official Hasbro account insisted that the change won’t actually impact the iconic Mr and Mrs toys, explaining that they would keep their titles.

The post read: ‘Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere!

‘While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the MR. I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD.’
