‘Practical Princess’ Kate Middleton wears trousers to look ‘ready for business’

Kate Middleton always looks chic and stylish, with her wardrobe usually made up of her favourite midi dresses and A line coats.

But in recent weeks, the Duchess of Cambridge has been opting increasingly for separates and, most notably, trousers. And royal expert Jennie Bond thinks there's a very specific reason for that.

'Kate is a practical princess and increasingly wears trousers to reflect that she's ready for business, whether that be kneeling down with kids or sliding down a slide,' Jennie said.

During her most recent engagement in Wales to celebrate St George's Day, the Duchess opted for black skinny jeans which she teamed with a green sweater – sweetly matching her husband William who also wore a jumper in the same shade.

The practical outfit meant that the outdoorsy princess could kneel down with the children she met and feed the animals on the farm she visited without fear of compromising her modesty or layers of fabric getting in the way.

Jennie notes: "She wants to appear approachable, one of the people, not an untouchable figure in the prim dress."

During her visit to Copenhagen last week Kate also opted for black bottoms and certainly made use of the more easy movement that the pair offered, giggling as she slid down a slide at the LEGO Foundation PlayLab.

She teamed the trousers with a pair of low heeled sling backs, another practical choice, and a red jacket from high street favourite Zara, believed by many to be a nod to the red in the Danish flag.

Trousers were also the order of the day – this time a pair of cropped black tailored pants – when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their eldest son George to see the recent rugby match between England and Wales at Twickenham stadium.

Kate's outfit choice meant she was not only wrapped up warm against the sharp winds on that day but she could bend down and excitedly chat to George about the sporting spectacle too. Kate also opted for pants at a recent engagement at the Foundling Museum.

Some also believe that Kate's sister in law Meghan may be the inspiration behind her wardrobe shift.

It was highly unusual to see the 40 year old Duchess in anything other than skirts and dresses before spending more time with Meghan, who is known to be a fan of teaming a blazer and trousers.
