‘Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.’

Principal photography for the biopic, which is based on Priscilla Presley’s New York Times bestselling memoir Elvis And Me (1985), started in Toronto in October .

Born Priscilla Ann Wagner (changed by adoption to Beaulieu) in 1945, and the daughter of U.S. Navy pilot, the New York City native was only 14 when she caught the eye of a then 24-year-old Elvis Presley during his military service in Germany in late 1959.

The pair eventually got married in 1967 and had a daughter, Lisa Marie, before separating in 1972, and divorcing the following year.

When searching for the actress to play Priscilla, Coppola made a point of trying to find someone who would be able to play her both as a teenager and a woman in her late 20s. And it turns out Spaeny was her top choice from the outset of adapting the story.

‘The character goes from the age of 15 to 27 over the course of the film, so she had to be able to act and age across a big span of time,’ the filmmaker, 51, explained to Vogue.

‘It was really important for me to have the same actress playing Priscilla at those different stages of her life, and I think Cailee can pull it off. She’s such a strong actress, and she also looks very young.’

When it came to finding the young man who could portray Elvis Presley, Coppola knew would be hard to find anyone who could come close to his incredible good looks and charisma. But in the end, it was Elordi’s own charisma that helped land him the role.

‘I thought nobody was gonna look quite like Elvis, but Jacob has that same type of magnetism. He’s so charismatic, and girls go crazy around him, so I knew he could pull off playing this type of romantic icon,’ the Lost In Translation writer and director revealed.

Different spans: Spaeny, left, will be playing Priscilla as a 15 year-old through until her late 20s; and Jacob is seen right in 2022

There’s no doubt Coppola, who’s also serving as executive producer, A24 and Sony Pictures are hoping to match or surpass the success as Luhrmann’s Elvis, which went on to gross $286 million at the worldwide box office on a $85 million budget.

Priscilla Presley, 77, was a huge supporter of the Elvis biopic, calling it ‘a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz, in his unique artistic way, could have delivered,’ She also hailed Butler’s performance, saying, ‘Bravo to him. He knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing this part. I can only imagine.’

Inspired by Priscilla’s life story as a teenager growing up at Graceland in Memphis, Coppola compared her story to that of ‘Marie Antoinette.’

‘The hardest part of writing the script was just editing down so many incredible details from Priscilla’s memoir,’ she said. ‘I was interested in trying to imagine what growing up in that world must have looked like through her eyes.’

So far, there’s no official word on when Priscilla will makes it premiere.
