Queen’s ‘comment about Lilibet’s name’ as Meghan and Harry’s decision ‘bewildered’ royals

On June 4, 2021, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their second child into the world, a daughter named Lilibet, in honour of the Queen's nickname.

And as the couple chose the beautiful name for their daughter, the Queen was said to be supportive of their decision, while many of the Royal family weren't on the same page with the Duke and Duchess' name choice, according to a new biography.

In Gyles Brandreth's upcoming biography Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, serialised in the Mail Online, he writes: “According to the Sussexes, Harry sought his grandmother’s permission to use her family nickname as the Christian name for her 11th great-grandchild.

“The Queen’s recollection was a little different. According to the Queen, Harry told her the Sussexes wanted to call the baby ‘Lilibet’ in her honour and she accepted their choice with good grace, taking it as the compliment it was intended to be.

“Others in the family found the choice ‘bewildering’ and ‘rather presumptuous’, given that ‘Lilibet’ as a name had always been intimately and exclusively the Queen’s.

"Later, the Queen said: ‘I hear they’re calling her “Lili”, which is very pretty and seems just right.’”

OK! has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.

Lilibet's middle name is Diana – a tribute to Harry's late mother, while Princess Charlotte, seven, also has Diana as one of her middle names, as well as Elizabeth.

It comes after Meghan revealed daughter Lilibet has “just started walking”.

Speaking on a new episode of Archetypes, Meghan told actor Pamela Adlon that her youngest child has made her first few steps.

"Lili has just started walking. She's a year and a couple of months old, and Archie is just over three years old."

Meghan then gave an insight into her life as a mother of two, revealing she will make breakfast for Harry, Archie, three, and one year old Lilibet every morning.

"It’s both monitors on for the kids, to hear them,” she said. “[I’m] always up with Lili, get her downstairs, then half an hour later, Archie’s up.

"My husband’s helping me get him downstairs and I make breakfast for all three of them.”

When asked what Harry is like as a father with his children, Meghan said: "Oh, he's great. To do this as a single mum, I bow down to you.

"How someone does this without a partner to help them through, it is so much work when you are just trying to be a conscious parent to raise a good, kind human being.

"To do that solo is the most impressive, admirable thing on the planet,” she added.
