Ricky Gervais reveals why he will NEVER host the Academy Awards

‘I’d be canceled halfway through’: Ricky Gervais reveals why he will NEVER host the Academy Awards … after helming the Golden Globes five times

The producers behind this year’s Academy Awards are currently searching for a host for the 94th annual Oscars but it won’t be Ricky Gervais.

The 60-year-old comedian revealed that he would ‘never’ helm the esteemed film awards show because he wouldn’t be allowed to do what he wanted, during an appearance Today with Hoda & Jenna on Tuesday.

Ricky has hosted the Golden Globes five times now but explained that he knows the rules would be very different for the Oscars and he’s just not interested.

Being himself: Ricky Gervais revealed that he would ‘never’ host The Oscars because he wouldn’t be allowed to do what he wanted, during an appearance Today with Hoda & Jenna on Tuesday

‘I’d be canceled halfway through,’ he joked while appearing virtually on the morning show.

‘They’d never let me do what I wanted. That’s why the Globes got me,’ he went on to explain. ‘They said I can write my own jokes and say what I want, no rehearsals. The Oscars would never. And if the Oscars said that, then I’d do it but that would never happen.’

Gervais’ stint as Golden Globes host raised more than a few eyebrows due to his hysterical and often merciless jokes at the expense of Hollywood’s well-heeled.

He recently confessed on The Graham Norton Show that, despite the spot on delivery of his zingers, he gets nervous before roasting the Golden Globe’s star-studded audience.

‘But by the fifth time I think I hit the mark – everyone was being horrible about celebrities; it was part of the zeitgeist,’ he said.

‘I loved it but it was nerve wracking because you have just one chance not to fluff the joke – it’s like taking a penalty at Wembley! I’m really glad I did it but it’s enough.’

Ricky skewered ‘woke’ Hollywood, made jokes about Jeffrey Epstien, Harvey Weinstein and Prince Andrew, and tackled topics such as MeToo and ISIS as he left his A-list audience wincing at previous Golden Globes ceremonies.

Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and Gwyneth Paltrow were left with stunned looks on their faces as the actor mocked Felicity Huffman over the college admission scandal in 2020.

This year’s Golden Globes telecast was canceled amid controversy surrounding a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press. The ceremony earlier this month was a closed private affair that featured no celebrities, hosts, presenters or nominees. Winners were live tweeted.

The Oscars, meanwhile, will return to a hosted format this year though no one has been officially tapped to run the show.

Last week Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment, confirmed that after four years without one, The Academy would hire a main host: ‘You heard it here first.’

So far, names like Tom Holland and Pete Davidson have been batted around as potentials, as well as Jimmy Kimmel who served as the last host, two-years running.

The 94th Academy Awards is scheduled to air on ABC March 27.
