Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell enters hospice care with ‘days to live’ while surrounded by family…after suffering liver failure following years-long battle with alcohol abuse

  • Harwell, 56, is days away from death, according to his manager
  • The singer has entered hospice care when friends and family have joined him
  • In 2021, he raised concerns after a curse-filled slurring performance in NYC 

 Steve Harwell, the lead singer for the rock band Smash Mouth, is reportedly close to death after facing medical issues in recent years and displaying concerning public behavior.

The frontman, who is only 56 years old, has now entered hospice care, his manager told TMZ on Sunday.

He has reportedly been surrounded by his family members as he enters his final days.

Harwell has reportedly dealt with alcohol abuse and its physical affects for years. In October of 2021, Smash Mouth fans became concerned for Harwell’s wellbeing after he was seen slurring his speech, cursing and making threats at a concert.

A representative for Smash Mouth tells DailyMail.com that, ‘Steve is resting at home and being cared for by his fiancé and hospice care.’

They add that the musician is ‘surrounded by family and friends.’

Emphasizing the rocker’s need for privacy, he concluded: ‘My only additional comment is that we would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.’ 

The musical artist was one of the founding members of Smash Mouth when the band first got together in 1994. 

Skyrocketing to fame with catchy singles like Walkin’ On The Sun, Why Can’t We Be Friends, and All Star, Steve and the rest of Smash Mouth found global success when they were featured in the 2001 computer-animated film Shrek. 

In addition to All Star being featured prominently in the film, fans ate up Smash Mouth’s cover of the Monkees classic hit I’m A Believer.

Serving as one of the only two constant members of the original Smash Mouth group until his retirement, Steve encountered health and substance abuse problems after the band’s smashing success. 

In 2013 the California-born singer was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a cluster of diseases that adversely affect the heart. 

Following the disheartening diagnosis, the Rat Race star was also hit with a second medical setback — Wernicke encephalopathy.

The life-threatening neurological condition can cause of whole slew of negative symptoms, from confusion, difficulty walking, and hypothermia.

Now in hospice care with supposedly only days to live, Steve is reportedly dying from the final stage of liver failure.

He had been receiving treatment for his liver issues at a hospital until he was sent to hospice care. 

The singer has yet to reach the age of 60.
