Talk to the paw! Naga Munchetty left fuming as Larry the cat snubs her

Talk to the paw! Naga Munchetty is left fuming as Larry the Cat snubs her and her fashion sense is mocked while she reports from Downing Street

She’s managed to hold her own in a series of intense interviews with politicians, dignitaries and divisive figures.

Yet Naga Munchetty met her match on Friday as she found herself snubbed by Larry the Cat in awkward scenes on BBC Breakfast.

The Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, 15, has been the most consistent figure at 10 Downing Street in recent years, seeing off four prime ministers during his time and earning a legion of fans worldwide.

On your Larry: Naga Munchetty met her match on Friday as she found herself snubbed by Larry the Cat in awkward scenes on BBC Breakfast

Therefore, as the country reeled from the resignation of Liz Truss after just 44 days as Prime Minister, it was understandable that Naga wanted to interview someone who’d spent more time inside Number 10 – turning her attention to Larry.

As is the fickle nature of cats, however, Larry was not having it and decided not to cooperate on the live broadcast.

A dismayed Naga told her co-star Charlie Stayt: ‘We saw Larry the cat here and one of the things we’ve noticed is that he’s quite aloof. He doesn’t really care for strangers.

‘I think he’s been so used to people coming in and out [of Downing Street] so I have extra admiration for you, Charlie because you actually managed to get a little stroke with him. He’s completely ignored all of us here.’

Charlie then recalled: ‘Yes, when I was down there – that was the time of Boris Johnson’s resignation, of course – there was some dismay amongst the rival teams there from various networks because he came walking over and, of course, came straight to the BBC Breakfast team.

‘He walked away from everybody else and came straight over. We took it as a sign.’

Sports presenter Mike Bushell then jumped into the chat to make a rather catty comment of his own, joking that Naga’s bright coat may have scared off the feline.

He quipped: ‘I like Naga’s outfit but the pink is quite loud isn’t it? It’s quite bright, bold. Maybe it’s too much for Larry?’

It’s been a tense time for the human residents of 10 Downing Street after Ms Truss resigned on Thursday after just 44 days in office, sending the country’s parliament into chaos and making it the laughing stock of the world.

Truss only took over from former leader Boris Johnson on September 6 after winning an internal Conservative Party leadership contest.

She quickly lost the faith of the party to such an extent that she was deemed unfit to lead the week in a wave of no confidence letters from colleagues.

As the Conservative Party now scramble to elect a new leader, 10 Downing Street’s impartial resident Larry has been a shining example of doing one’s job properly.

Earlier this month, the tabby cat did an excellent job of defending his patch when he clashed with a fox on Downing Street before intimidating it into vanishing into the distance.

Despite being around half the size of the wily fox, brave and persistent Larry was able to force his counterpart into retreating into nearby bushes.

In Larry we Truss: It’s been a tense time for the human residents of 10 Downing Street after Ms Truss resigned on Thursday after just 44 days in office

Larry, who has its own parody Twitter account, couldn’t help comparing his encounter to that of Truss’ controversial start as the new Prime Minister.

He tweeted:  ‘Someone at this address is up to the job…’ before sharing a video of the scuffle captioned: ‘Fox off’.

Larry the Cat joined his new Downing Street home in 2011 after being rescued from Battersea Cats’ Home.

He has been the companion to many Prime Minister’s over the years including David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

The cat has been known to have tussles with other animals including his archenemy Palmerston, the mouser from the Foreign Office as well as in 2012 with Freya the cat who belonged to former Chancellor George Osborne.

Alas, cats are not eligible to take on the role of Prime Minister for the United Kingdom, yet a tweet from Larry joking about taking on the job quickly went viral this week amid the period of national unrest.

Alongside a mocked up image of Larry at a lectern outside Number 10, he penned: ‘The King has asked me to become Prime Minister because this nonsense has gone on long enough.’
