The 3 Reasons Giada De Laurentiis' Shrimp Fra Diavolo Recipe Got Hundreds of Great Reviews

Giada De Laurentiis’ shrimp fra diavolo is one of the Food Network star’s favorite ways to enjoy fresh shrimp. And her spin on the classic spicy seafood dish is most definitely not for the faint of heart.

With over 500 five-star reviews on the culinary channel’s site, there are three good reasons the chef’s recipe is the winner it is.

De Laurentiis’ Shrimp Fra Diavolo  has a ‘fiery kick’

“Fra diavolo,” as De Laurentiis notes on her food blog Giadzy, means “’devil’s brother’ in Italian, because this recipe has got quite a fiery kick from red pepper flakes. What I love, though, is that it’s not just spicy – it has tons of bright, fresh flavor from the herbs and tomatoes. It’s delicious, quick to cook, and quite healthy. What’s not to love?”

The celebrity chef adds that the dish can be served on its own, or with any number of grains or kinds of pasta, including calamarata, so named because of its ring-like resemblance to the Italian squid appetizer, calamari.

“You can serve this as-is, but I love it with pasta (it’s fabulous with calamarata, or even angel hair or spaghettini), rice, risotto, or even just crusty bread – anything to help soak up that delicious pan-sauce,” she explained.

Why reviewers were so wowed by De Laurentiis’ shrimp dish

As De Laurentiis pointed out, her shrimp fra diavolo has three important characteristics: it’s tasty, quick, and healthy. And that’s exactly what reviewers on Food Network’s site loved about the dish as well.

One home cook praised her recipe, though it wasn’t nearly spicy enough for them: “Giada does it again with a great and super healthy dish. I let the tomato/onion/wine simmer for 18 minutes to thicken more than the recommended 10, and it was delicious. The spiciness was decent, though I’m going to try adding just a dash of cayenne for some more ‘diavolo.’”

Other reviewers succinctly noted what so many others said: “This was delicious! Healthy meal….quick………! Thanks!” and “It was quick and easy, didn’t require any unusual pantry items, and of course it was tasty.”

Giada De Laurentiis’ shrimp recipe is also perfect for those learning their way around the kitchen

The beauty of De Laurentiis’ recipe, as many reviewers remarked, is that it’s a great dish for new cooks to ace.

The shrimp are tossed with salt and red pepper flakes, cooked for no more than two minutes, then set aside. In the same skillet, sliced onions are cooked until tender, then simmered with tomatoes, wine, garlic, and oregano. The shrimp are returned to the pan, mixed with the sauce, fresh basil, and parsley, and served. So simple!

“This was perfect. Even a beginner cook could make this. It was as good as any I have ever had in a restaurant,” one reviewer said.

Another five-star review read, “Noob cook here.. Wanting to learn how to cook better and more stuff. This dish was outstanding and very easy to cook. Made it to a keepers list. TY!!”

“I don’t have a whole lot of experience cooking, but whenever I use Giada’s recipes I feel like a real cook! This dish is excellent,” a fan of the recipe added.

So if quick, delicious, and healthy are on the menu, De Laurentiis’ shrimp fra diavolo is destined to become one of your favorite go-to dishes!
