‘It’s disturbing and violative’: The Last Of Us creators reveal why they chose to film THAT stomach-churning kissing scene in episode two

The creators of The Last Of Us have discussed the stomach-churning kissing scene that got viewers talking in episode two.

The show is centered around the parasitic Cordyceps fungus – which tends to infect insects – evolving to control the human race and according to the showrunner Craig Mazin, is ‘real.’

The second episode introduced viewers to the ‘clickers’, humans who have become so infected with the fungus they are no longer recognisably human.

The episode ended with Tess (Anna Torv) sacrificing herself to save Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).

After already becoming infected, Tess doused a building in gasoline and lured the infected towards her, allowing the other two to escape.

Just as she lit the flame, viewers watched as one of the infected leaned in and kissed her, with its tendrils going into her mouth.

The Last Of Us creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the scene with Variety, which they described as ‘disturbing’.

Mazin said: ‘We were already talking about tendrils coming out and we were asking these philosophical questions, ‘Why are infected people violent? If the point is to spread the fungus, why do they need to be violent?’ We landed on that they don’t.

‘They’re violent because we resist, but what if you don’t? What does it look like if you just stand perfectly still and let them do this to you?

‘Then we landed on this nightmare fuel. It’s disturbing and it’s violative. I think it’s very primal in the way it invades your own body. To use an overused word, it’s triggering.’

The show changed the plot of the video game, in which Anna was killed by soldiers.

The parasitic fungal infection – inspired by the real-life ophiocordyceps unilateralis – killed off 60% of the population and has four stages of infection, which increasingly causes humans to resemble zombie-like monsters that use echolocation.

It takes someone over a decade to reach stage four of the infection where they develop hardened fungal plates, release infectious spores, and are increasingly difficult to kill.

The Last of Us also features Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Gabriel Luna and Merle Dandridge.

The Last of Us is a small-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog’s best-selling 2013 motion-capture video game of the same name, which appeared to be heavily inspired by AMC’s The Walking Dead and Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men.

‘We are thrilled to see fans of the series and game alike experience this iconic story in a new way, and we extend our gratitude to them for helping to make it a success,’ HBO chairman Casey Bloys said in a statement.

‘Congratulations to Craig, Neil, and the brilliant cast and crew who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. We look forward to fans around the world enjoying the rest of the season.’
