One week after its shocking debut episode on HBO, The Idol returned with its second episode, which will likely prove to be just as controversial as the first.
The series – which hails from creators Sam Levinson (Euphoria), The Weeknd and Reza Fahim – returned on Sunday night with Double Fantasy, which shows the mysterious Tedros (The Weeknd) character slowly starting to take over the life of music superstar Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp).
The episode featured more of Jocelyn masturbating and self-harming, while still mourning the loss of her mother… which she’s still clearly not over yet.
Double Fantasy also gives fans a glimpse into Tedros’ day-to-day life, where he runs a cult-like management company on top of his nightclub seen in the pilot, with Tedros seen using a shock collar frequently on one of his clients.
As in the pilot, fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts on the episode, including one fan who went directly to The Weeknd’s Instagram.

Dogs**t: ‘The show is dogs**t my guy i love you but stick to music,’ @rckkstrmade commented, which received over 900 likes
The Weeknd took to Instagram on Sunday, stating, ‘episode 2 drops in 1 hour… with new music out the same night // tune in @streamonmax @hbo LET’S GO!’
One fan – @rckkstrmade – didn’t pull any punches, leaving a scathing comment on The Weeknd’s post.

Once again, the show features a bizarre masturbating scene with Jocelyn, though fully clothed, which another fan commented on.
Tedros had come to Jocelyn’s home with some friends, though they ultimately all went into separate parts of the house, with one scene showing Tedros ultimately watching Jocelyn masturbate, fully clothed.
@shivvy tweeted, ‘Are we gonna have to watch her masturbate in all 6 episodes?’ adding #THEIDOL hashtag.
Another scene showed Tedros at his club, telling Izaak how to writhe about while several young women are laying below him.
He even uses a shock collar on Izaak, telling him, ‘You’re not a human, Izaak. Don’t forget. You’re a f***ing star.’

@sovietmovies tweeted, ‘The Idol is just Red Shoe Diaries with a 5 episode arc and sometimes better acting. SOMETIMES.’
@ChloeSmiley3 added, ‘The Idol better get canned while @sum1saiditinnit added, ‘The Idol is one of them shows where u can feel them actively trying to figure out wtf it is while it’s shooting. Some good stuff, some bad stuff.’
The entire season was reportedly roughly 80% done filming when creator Levinson reportedly fired director Amy Seimetz and proceeded to reshoot the entire series with him at the helm.
@richplow added, ‘The HBO with a rare miss with The Idol. This show is super a**.’
Still, there were some positive reactions as well, including @megsokay, who tweeted, ‘Okay. I would still give THE IDOL a B, because it is technically well done, but story-wise, derivative. However, I really do not think this show is endorsing abuse AT ALL. If anything it is using satire and horror to shine a light on the nuances of abuse. (One woman’s opinion!)’
@andrew_balis tweeted, ‘Rachel Sennott and Hank Azaria’s fake Israeli accent are the only redeeming aspects of The Idol.’
@onizms added, ‘Kinda makes me sick knowing the script work on The Idol is disgusting, like yeah Jennie is killing it but my god you can tell even from the tl snippets of her how men wrote it from their gazes it’s so… vile really.’

The episode ends with new character Chloe (Suzanne Son) singing at Jocelyn’s piano, as Jocelyn, Tedros, Izaak and Leia all join her.
It seems that actual song will be released tonight, with The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) tweeting a part of the lyrics – ‘that’s my family… we don’t like each other very much but I’m ok with that.’
When a fan asked if the song will be released, Tesfaye said, ‘TONIGHT in less than 2 hours “that’s my family.”‘
It’s unclear if there are plans to release other music from the show throughout the show’s six-episode season.
It’s also unclear if HBO will renew the show for a second season or not, with the first episode debuting to an underwhelming 913K viewers for the linear broadcasts.

The episode begins with Jocelyn calling in her team including record label exec Nikki (Jane Adams), co-managers Chaim (Hank Azaria) and Destiny (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), creative director Xander (Troye Sivan) and her best friend/assistant Leia (Rachel Sennott).
She tells them that last night she remixed her upcoming single World Class Sinner after her unique tryst with Tedros… where he choked her before cutting an air hole at the last second.
She plays the song for them but no one likes it, as Nikki blasts her for trying to change the song so close to release, though it only drives her closer to Tedros.
We get a brief glimpse into his life, seeing him chatting with Jocelyn while Izaak (Moses Sumney) chats with Jocelyn’s BFF Leia, who has always thought Tedros was sketchy… though it seems Izaak may be trying to woo Leia on Tedros’ behalf, to get her out of the way as he digs deeper into Jocelyn’s life.
Tedros even casually suggests he should move in to her house, which she easily accepts, as he continues to infiltrate her life on an even deeper level.
The preview teases Tedros getting closer and closer, which worries Leia, who is calling someone saying that, ‘Tedros is just taking over the house.’
The final shot of the preview shows Jocelyn introducing Tedros to her managers Chaim and Destiny, who says, ‘Never trust a dude with a rat tail.’
