Have you watched The Tinder Swindler on Netflix yet? If the answer to that is no, please run (don’t walk) to whoever’s account you’re currently logged into, because it is harrowing. Quick recap before we move on: the doc focuses on con-man Simon Leviev (one of his many aliases), who ran a Ponzi scheme in which he matched with women on Tinder, convinced them he was the incredibly wealthy son of a “diamond king,” told them that his life was in danger and he needed money, and ultimately conned them out of tens-if-not-hundreds of thousands of dollars.
While Simon did briefly end up in a Finnish prison for two years, viewers have understandably been concerned that he’s once again on Tinder. But apparently not so much. The dating app has banned Simon (who also goes by Shimon Hayut). As a spokesperson put it to E! News, “We banned Simon Leviev and any of his known aliases as soon as the story of his actions became public in 2019. He is permanently banned from Tinder. In the lead up to the release of the documentary, we conducted additional internal investigations and can confirm Simon Leviev is not active on Tinder under any of his known aliases.”
Following the release of Netflix’s documentary, Simon posted a statement on Instagram claiming he was going to tell his version of the story. However, his account has seemingly been deleted since then.
Meanwhile, Variety reports that Netflix is in talks to adapt the documentary into a feature film.
