Tom Hanks transforms into Geppetto in NEW TEASER for Pinocchio

Pinocchio first look! Tom Hanks transforms into Geppetto and recreates classic ‘star light, star bright’ scene from original cartoon in magical new trailer for live-action remake

Tom Hanks stars in a magical new teaser for the live-action remake of Pinocchio.

The 65-year-old movie star has been cast in the role of Geppetto, the village puppeteer who prays for one of his creations to become real.

At the opening of the trailer, Geppetto sits by the window before bed and wishes upon a star – recreating an iconic scene from the original animated classic.

Wow: Tom Hanks was virtually unrecognizable in character in an evocative new teaser for the live-action remake of Pinocchio

‘Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight,’ says the live-action Geppetto, just as the cartoon did.

The audience is then treated to a few haunting strains of the new version of When You Wish Upon A Star recorded specially for the new version of the film.

In the live-action remake, the number will be performed by Cynthia Erivo, who is featuring in the memorable role of the Blue Fairy.

After a few tantalizing glimpses of Geppetto at work in his studio, the trailer also finally lets audiences get a look at some of the other characters.

Cynthia’s Blue Fairy is briefly seen materializing in Geppetto’s studio, where his puppet Pinocchio magically comes to life.

Geppetto makes his wish upon a star, which works its charm on the puppet only halfway, making him sentient but still wood.

Pinocchio then spends the movie on a quest to fulfil his creator’s hopes and become a real-life flesh-and-blood boy.

For the live-action remake, Pinocchio is voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, 13, a child actor from England who has been on Emmerdale.

Unmistakable: Jiminy Cricket, the insect who becomes Pinocchio’s ‘conscience’ and is voiced in the new film by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, pops up several times in the teaser

Robert Zemeckis is directing the new film, which he wrote with Chris Weitz, who previously wrote the screenplay for Disney’s 2015 live-action Cinderella remake.

Although Pinocchio himself is kept out of the spotlight in the new teaser, several other characters do make quick appearances.

Jiminy Cricket, the insect who becomes Pinocchio’s ‘conscience’ and is voiced in the new film by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, pops up several times.

At one point he appears to narrowly avoid getting eaten by Sofia the Seagull, a character voiced by GoodFellas star Lorraine Bracco.

Furry fiends: Also featured is the duplicitous fox ‘Honest John’, voiced by sketch comedy star Keegan-Michael Key, and his sidekick Gideon the Cat

In another scene Sofia helpfully pulls Geppetto’s boat across the water by a rope, which Jiminy clings onto for dear life.

The Hobbit beefcake Luke Evans puts in a blink-and-miss-it cameo in the teaser as a villainous character called The Coachman.

Even Geppetto’s pet goldfish Cleo can be seen floating about in her tank as he steps out into the rain with her to search for Pinocchio.

Snoozing: The puppet-maker’s mischievous cat Figaro, apparently rendered in CGI for the live-action remake, can be spotted lounging at home too

Is that Stromboli?: One of the characters briefly shown in the teaser appeared to be the villainous puppeteer who serves as a stark contrast to the sweet and gentle Geppetto

Along with the teaser, Disney unveiled a new poster for the film, which shows Pinocchio in silhouette trotting through the countryside by himself.

Pinocchio marks the latest collaboration between Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, whose films together have included Forrest Gump and The Polar Express.

Robert is also reuniting with his frequent collaborators composer Alan Silvestri and cinematographer Don Burgess for Pinocchio, which bows on Disney+ September 8.

Based on a 19th century Italian children’s book, the original animated feature was released in 1940 and was a critical triumph but a commercial flop.

Although its initial box office was stymied by World War II, which prevented the film from coming out in several overseas markets, it was subsequently repeatedly re-released and became a beloved children’s classic.

Pinocchio was played by the child actor Dick Jones, while Geppetto was voiced by the Austrian-born character actor Christian Rub.
