Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, 47, admitted his relationship with Keeley Hawes, 45, hasn’t always been plain sailing after the pair of actors hit it off whilst filming their MI5 drama Spooks. He went on reveal seeing her film intimate scenes with Game Of Thrones actor Richard Madden, 35, was a “weird” experience.

Matthew and Keeley met on the set of Spooks in 2002 and married two years later in 2004.

The pair have been married for nearly 20 years and Matthew has spoken about one of the tough moments in their romance.

However Matthew, who plays Tom Wambsgans in HBO’s Succession, recently confessed their relationship hasn’t always been easy in a candid interview.

In light of the passionate sex scenes which occur between Keeley and Richard in Bodyguard, The Times asked Matthew if he ever found it “uncomfortable to see his wife in other men’s arms”.

In response to the question, he merely shrugged and said it was “just weird”.

However, when asked if it ever “touched a nerve” he conceded that it did.

“It does [touch a nerve] a little bit,” he responded.

The actor went on to express his knowledge of how sex scenes work helped to ease his discomfort.

“It’s the least sexy thing you can possibly imagine,” he explained.

He also applauded more productions making use of intimacy coordinators, adding he had “heard stories” of other actors feeling pressured to do thing they were uncomfortable with in those situations.

He said: “I wish we’d had them. Because then you’re not afraid to go, ‘I don’t want to do that.’

“It sounds OTT, but it’s a healthy overcorrection, because it takes away the pressure to take off all your clothes, or do stuff you didn’t want to do?”

When quizzed about his own relationship, Matthew admitted it was “not easy” to maintain a marriage in an industry that often requires so much intimacy with other people.

“You can get quite close to the actors you’re working with and all that stuff. It’s odd,” he acknowledged.

When Matthew and Keeley met, the latter had just got married to Spencer McCallum, with whom she shared her eldest child Myles, 21.

The pair divorced in 2004 after just two years of marriage, though it has been reported Keeley left Spencer just eight weeks after the wedding.

At the time, Matthew and Keeley received a lot of media attention for forming a relationship so soon after her marriage broke down and Matthew has credited their resilience as a couple for being able to withstand such scrutiny.

Matthew and Keeley share two children together, Maggie, 16, and 15-year-old Ralph.

Aside from working on Spooks, the TV show which brought them together, the pair have since worked together on Life On Mars sequel show Ashes to Ashes, which featured the actress in a leading role.

The pair have also worked together on the 2007 film Death At A Funeral.
