‘It was the most ridiculous display of his ego’: Will Smith reveals the THREE YEARS he spent organising wife Jada’s 40th birthday party ‘was my low point’

Old footage of Jada Pinkett Smith revealing that her 40th birthday party was a ‘ridiculous display’ of her husband Will’s ‘own ego’ has resurfaced in wake of the Oscar slap drama.

The two, who have been married since since 1997, were speaking in an episode of Red Table Talk, the Facebook show which Jada, now 50, hosts with their daughter Willow, 21, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, 68.

During the chat the two confirmed that the incident was the ‘turning point’ in their relationship leading Jada to have an affair with musician August Alsina, 29.

Jada recalled: ‘I think the turning point in our relationship for me, happened when I turned 40. That’s when I had a mid-life crisis.’

Will agreed, saying: ‘Yeah, your 40th birthday was my low point.’

The actor, who shares daughter Willow and son Jayden, 23, with Jada, explained how he had spent three years planning his wife’s elaborate birthday bash.

‘The day after her 37th birthday, I hired a team to orchestrate her 40th birthday.’

Jada sighed: ‘It was going to be a splash.’

‘It was going to be the thing that lifted her out of this mid-life crisis. It was going to be my deepest most beautiful proclamation of love.

The footage comes after Will’s infamous slapping of Chris Rock at the Oscars after the comic made a joke about Jada’s bald head.

Just 40 minutes after the incident, Will won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams – father of tennis legends Serena and Venus – in the biopic King Richard.

Will issued a public apology to Chris the next evening – saying that his behavior was ‘unacceptable and inexcusable’.

The star wrote in an Instagram post that he was ’embarrassed’ by his actions, which shocked the ceremony attendees, producers and viewers, and sparked a furious debate that divided both A-listers and spectators alike.

‘Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,’ he wrote.

‘My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

‘I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.’

Will then went on to say sorry to the organisers and the producers of the show.

Chris has not responded to Will’s apology and the comedian has yet to publicly comment on the incident – however it was revealed in the hours after the slap that he had chosen not to file a police report against the actor.

Several of Smith’s upcoming films have been halted indefinitely due to the slap and a bidding war over the rights to his memoir quickly fizzled out.

On Friday, Will resigned from The Academy calling his actions during the ceremony ‘shocking, painful and inexcusable,’ adding that he would accept any additional consequences issued by the Academy’s Board of Governors.

‘The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,’ Smith said. ‘I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.’

He has until next week to formally defend his actions in a written letter to the Academy before the board of governors meet to decide what punishment is deemed appropriate for his assault on the presenter.
