Season premiere: John Dutton was sworn in as the Governor of Montana and enacted drastic measures to stop an airport project and curb development on Sunday’s explosive season five premiere of the ‘anti-woke’ neo-Western drama Yellowstone on Paramount Network

The series has been dubbed as ‘anti-woke’ by some critics and was recognized by the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year with a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The first of two season five premiere episodes titled One Hundred Years Is Nothing opened with John during his victory speech making it  clear that he would be running things much differently. He declared that that state would no longer be treated as the rich people’s ‘plaything’.

‘My first act as Governor will be to cancel funding for the Paradise Valley airport project and the surrounding commercial and housing developments,’ John told the crowd. ‘God isn’t making any more land and he certainly isn’t filling any more rivers.’

John said he also was going to propose doubling property taxes for non-residents and charging them a six percent sales tax.

‘This is our home,’ John said. ‘Perhaps if you choose to make Montana your home you will start treating it like a home and not a vacation rental.’

Jamie and Beth Dutton [Kelly Reilly] were by their father’s side when the results were announced.

‘We have a lot of work to do and a lot of work to undo,’ John told his crowd of supporters. ‘The question we all have to answer, the one that I will look at every day is…what will Montana look like in a hundred years?’

Good question: ‘We have a lot of work to do and a lot of work to undo,’ John told his crowd of supporters. ‘The question we all have to answer, the one that I will look at every day is…what will Montana look like in a hundred years?’

Jamie stared at Beth as confetti fell down around them. At the casino, Thomas Rainwater [Gil Birmingham] looked up and saw the news that John had won the election.

‘He will kill the hotel and the airport,’ Thomas said. ‘It’s a good thing for the land but I don’t see how it’s good for us.’

CEO of Market Equities Caroline Warner [Jacki Weaver] was also upset at John’s win.

Bad news: CEO of Market Equities Caroline Warner [Jacki Weaver] was also upset at John’s win

‘This f***ing family,’ Caroline said. ‘I told you to go after the daughter and now he’s the governor. He will shut us down on day one.’

Ellis Steele [John Emmet Tracy] pointed out to Caroline that Jamie didn’t look happy. She ordered him to bring in Sarah Atwood [Dawn Olivieri] to help.

‘We’re taking the gloves off, Ellis,’ Caroline said. ‘I’m tired of playing with these f***ing hillbillies.’

Family enemy: ‘This f***ing family,’ Caroline said. ‘I told you to go after the daughter and now he’s the governor. He will shut us down on day one’

The show also delved into the start of Beth and Rip Wheeler’s relationship. It flashbacked to when he was just a young ranch hand and when she was about to go to college. He walked out on their first date and she ended up hooking up with another ranch hand in front of him.

‘I was f***ing awful to you,’ Beth said to Rip [Cole Hauser]. ‘If it is any consolation I was worse on myself.’

Beth cried and said she robbed them of so much time together.

‘I’m happy Beth,’ Rip said. ‘With you, with life, everything’s good.’

‘You did put me through hell, though,’ Rip said.

Back at the ranch, Rip told the other ranchers to shoot any coyote, wolf and bear that was attacking one of their calves.

John met with the US Senator Lynelle Perry [Wendy Moniz-Grillo] before his first meeting with his staff.

‘You could build a legal wall around this state,’ Lynette said. ‘Maybe in the next hundred years this place will look the same.’

Jamie told Beth she didn’t think any of what John proposed was legal. Beth told him to make it legal.

Sibling rivalry: Beth and Jamie clashed while meeting with their father

‘I’m about to work you like rented mule,’ Beth said.

Jamie urged John to reconsider canceling the airport.

‘There’s other revenue streams for the ranch, Jamie,’ Beth said.

Beth said she was charging $1.5 million for John’s inauguration. Jamie told her she couldn’t do that, it would be a violation.

‘Would you two just shut the f*** up,’ John said.

John said he was embarrassed by the mess he made of his family.

‘No matter how it scares you or how much you disagree, you are going to do exactly what the f*** I tell you for the next four years,’ John said.

John told him that the ranch comes first.

Livestock agent Kayce Dutton [Luke Grimes] arrested a team of horse wranglers at the Canadian border. Kayce called his pregnant wife Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille Chow) about having to take some of the horses back to the town. Monica told him she wanted to meet him there because her cramps were bad.

‘I don’t want you giving birth on the side of the road,’ Kayce said. ‘I’ll send an ambulance south to meet you.’

Monica drove with Tate Dutton [Brecken Merrill] to the hospital but the car swerved when she screamed in pain and crashed into a buffalo and another car.

The next morning, John, Beth and Jamie rushed to the hospital in Billings during the second episode titled The Sting Of Wisdom. Kayce was hugging Monica who was hooked up to machines.

‘I had a brother,’ Tate said. ‘For an hour anyway.’

Tate told John the boy was named John.

John named Beth his chief of staff and told her he just wanted to cancel the airport.

‘Revoke the funding,’ John said. ‘Order an environmental review and cancel the lease.’

‘They will sue you,’ Jamie said.

‘That land is zoned agricultural,’ Beth said. ‘So how are they building an airport and condos on land that is agricultural?’

Beth set a meeting with the Park county commissioner and told Jamie to draft the proposal.

‘You’re in my prison now and If you ever forget it, I’ll put you in a real one,’ Beth said.

At a private airport, Sarah walked off a private jet and later arrived at Caroline’s office. Caroline told her that John was having a press conference. They watched as John announced his plan to cease all funding for the Paradise Valley development project.

‘All state permits are revoked,’ John said.

Caroline immediately ordered her team to get a cease and desist before a judge by the next day and to file suit against the state for breach of contract. Sarah watched the press conference and decided that Jamie looked like a weak link.

Permits revoked: ‘All state permits are revoked,’ John said

‘I love it when she gets really mad,’ Sarah said. ‘It means I’m going to make a lot of money.’

John and Beth went to a bar and met with the park officials. They were angry about the loss of revenue caused by the deal being cancelled. John told him they will raise revenue another way and told them to deny the project’s request to rezone the land. The two agreed.

Colby [Denim Richards] and Ryan [Ian Bohen] went out and killed the wolves as Rip instructed but then realized later they killed tagged wolves from the park.

Night hunt: Colby [Denim Richards] and Ryan [Ian Bohen] went out and killed the wolves as Rip instructed but then realized later they killed tagged wolves from the park

‘These wolves have f***ing Facebook pages,’ Ryan said. ‘People walk around in t-shirts with their pictures on them. People find out that we killed them, on the governor’s ranch.’

Ryan said they need to get the tags off the wolves and cover up what they did.

Rip got a call from Colby and Ryan and rode out.

Wrong wolves: ‘These wolves have f***ing Facebook pages,’ Ryan said. ‘People walk around in t-shirts with their pictures on them. People find out that we killed them, on the governor’s ranch’

‘Why in the hell did you shoot the ones with collars?’ Rip said

Rip instructed them to take the collars off and ride back to the park. Rip had them attach the collars to a piece of wood and dump them into a river. He told them to tell no one about what they did.

The episode ended with one of the radio collars getting stuck on some branches as the others floated away.

Yellowstone will return next week on Paramount Network.
