You star Penn Badgley reveals he asked for fewer sex scenes

‘Fidelity in my marriage is important’: You star Penn Badgley reveals he asked for fewer sex scenes in latest season of the Netflix drama out of respect for wife Domino Kirke

Penn Badgley has revealed he asked for fewer sex scenes in the latest season of Netflix hit You.

The actor, 36, made the decision out of respect for wife Domino Kirke, with whom he shares son James, 24 months.

Speaking on his Podcrushed podcast, Penn told co-host Nava Kavelin: ‘I asked [showrunner] Sera Gamble can I just do no more intimacy scenes’.

The series follows Penn’s serial killer Joe Goldberg and his obsession with women, and has featured many saucy scenes in seasons past.

He said:  ‘This is actually a decision I made before I took the show. I don’t think I have ever mentioned it publicly. One of the main things was, do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always playing the romantic lead?’

‘Fidelity in every relationship, including my marriage, is important to me. It’s got to the point where I don’t want to do that’.

The former Gossip Girl actor went on to say: ‘So I said ‘my desire would be zero, to go from 100 to zero.’

‘But I signed this contract. I signed up for this show. I know what I did. You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept. So how much less can you make it, was my question to them.

‘She didn’t even bat an eye. She was really glad that I was that honest. She was sort of almost, I want to say empowered, it had a really positive response. They came back with a phenomenal reduction.’

Penn married the singer in two separate 2017 ceremonies, which was attended by famous pals Debra Messing, Mariska Hargitay and Zac Posen.

He previously dated Blake Lively and Zoe Kravitz. Domino has a child from a previous relationship.

Season four sees the action switch to London and Penn had a ‘great time’ shooting in the UK last year, though it meant being separated from his young family.

He told BBC Newsbeat: ‘I wasn’t able to be with my family as much as I would have liked to.

‘Apart from that, it was a great time, I remember it so fondly. I do truly love something of the culture there.

The trailer for season four shows Penn’s killer character receive a taste of his own medicine from a  vengeful serial killer as he attempts to keep a low profile under a new identity.

After killing ten people over the past three seasons Joe  is unable to escape his past once he catches the attention of a murder, who is dubbed the ‘Eat the Rich Killer.’

Following his move to London, and new life as Professor Jonathan Moore, Joe battles a fresh heartbreak, which he ominously calls the ‘catalyst for a new path.’

Daddy: The couple share 2-year-old son James, who Penn said he missed terribly when filming the new season in London

The trailer for the hit Netflix series begins with Joe receiving a flashback from his ex Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), who tells him he is a ‘murderer.’

‘You’re wrong about me,’ he replies. “I’m going to prove it to you.’

Later footage pans to him in a black tuxedo as he discovers that ‘laying low is imperative’ to his ability to survive.

‘Turns out teaching’s fun and London’s not so bad,’ he notes. ‘I fell in with the most insane, damaged people on earth. A circle of privileged douchebags,’

Despite finding fulfillment in his career, Joe admits to wishing he he had ‘someone’ out there as he stares longingly at a neighbor from his window.

As he fights the urge to rebound, Joe ultimately asks why ‘the universe’ keeps taunting him with beautiful women.

But just as he finally feels settled, Joe receives a message from an unknown number, which reads: ‘Nice jacket. Brown’s your color.’

‘I ran away from this, but one of you is watching me,’ he thinks to himself while scrabbling to uncover who is stalking him.

‘One of you is hiding in plain sight, so who are’ he asks himself. ‘I just want my little European holiday back.’

In September, Joe said he was ‘not the lovable bookstore manager in New York’ ‘or the doting husband in the suburbs’ in a new preview.

‘I’ve gone through a bit of refinement upon crossing the pond,’ he insisted while sipping from a teacup. ‘And living in London has allowed me to bury the past if you will.’

‘Gone are the days of unrequited love and longing,’ he says as Marienne, who successfully escaped his death grip in the past, appears onscreen.

He promises the audience that he’s focused on his work as a professor though a frame shows him creepily standing over a the shoulder of a new character named Kate (Amy-Leigh Hickman).

More new characters pop onscreen including his colleague Rhys (Ed Speleers), who appears to be a professor as well, and Nadia (Charlotte Ritchie).

‘Unfortunately, with friends in high places, there usually comes others attempting to climb that social ladder,’ he adds as party boy Adam (Lukas Gage) and Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper) dance together. ‘Some may end up falling or, shall I say, pushed to their social deaths.’

‘The question is: by whom?’ he says, indicating that he may not be as dedicated to his teaching as he claims.

A whole host of new stars on the show including Connie (Dario Coates), Blessing (Ozioma Whenu), Sophie (Niccy Lin), Simon (Aidan Cheng) and Gemma (Eve Austin) strut around the cluttered, dark apartment.

Marienne seems to recognize Joe at one point though no one else does, and he swiftly turns and walks away.
