AJ McLean ‘taken aback’ by daughter’s name change: ‘She’ll always be Ava to me’
AJ McLean’s daughter Elliott is ringing in her 10th birthday — and her first with a new name.
“MY GIRL is 10 today! 🎉🎂🎁,” the Backstreet Boys member’s wife, Rochelle McLean, gushed via Instagram Sunday. “Im going to smother her in love, hugs and kisses today!
“So proud of the little lady she’s growing into♥️,” the 41-year-old, who is also the mother of daughter Lyric, 5, continued.
“Forever grateful the creator chose me to be her momma 🙏🏻 I love you baby girl 🥰 Happy Birthday.”
AJ, 44, has yet to post about his eldest child’s big day but did address her recent name change in a September “Today” show interview, saying he was “taken aback” by her request.
“When my daughter asked to change her name to Elliott, initially, I didn’t know if it was a transgender thing, which it is not, but it is a personal choice,” the singer said of Elliott, who used to go by Ava.
AJ noted that the preteen would “always be Ava to” him.
“She’s still Ava,” he said. “But at the same time, whatever reasoning it is, that’s hers, and I’m going to support it a million percent. My wife will [too].”
Rochelle told her Instagram followers about Elliott’s decision after an August Instagram post caused confusion.
“For those asking … not that it’s anyone’s business but Elliott’s name change is not a gender thing,” the hairstylist wrote alongside a back-to-school snap.
“She wanted something unique that no one else had (There are so many Ava’s),” she explained via Stories at the time. “I didn’t really see the harm in respecting her desire to be unique.”
Rochelle and AJ have been married since December 2011, welcoming Elliott and Lyric in 2012 and 2017, respectively.
