Make-up artist Saffron Hughes of FalseEyelashes.co.uk has shared the make-up mistakes women make without realising, leading them to look older rather than younger. Saffron explained why some beauty products are best left alone.
Saffron warned against using heavy foundation that settles into fine lines.
She said: “As your skin matures, so should the foundation you use. Using a heavier, cream-based or full-coverage foundation can cause the make-up to settle into fine lines and creases, highlighting any imperfections.
“Instead, opt for a serum based foundation or tinted moisturiser that gives the illusion of hydrated, glowing skin.
“You’ll look more awake, youthful and you’ll still be able to cover imperfections.”
Heavy eye-make up is also best avoided as done incorrectly this shrinks eyes and creates dark circles.
“Heavy liner can age the eyes in so many ways,” Saffron claimed.
“Darker colours not only shrink the eyes but can also create darker shadows around them giving the appearance of tiredness.
“To look younger, the eyes should be wide and brighter. Adding a nude or pale eyeliner in the waterline can make the whites of your eyes pop.”

The make-up artist also advised against using gel eyeliner as this can “transfer throughout the day and settle into fine lines around your eyes”.
“Instead, opt for a smokey brown eyeshadow on a small pencil brush to get a precise but clear line,” she said.
As for eyebrows, the thicker the better. Saffron said: “Brows are a sure way to tell someone’s age. As we age, our hair naturally thins and eyebrows are no exception.
“For a youthful looking brow, take a fine brow pencil and create small strokes to give the illusion of a full and slightly arched brow that is going to lift the face.

“Drawing on brow hairs makes them look more realistic than using powder or gel formulas. It takes a little more time, but the difference is magic.”
Not everyone uses primer before putting on the rest of their make-up, but Saffron said they shouldn’t underestimate its importance.
“Primer is a mature woman’s best friend. Not only can it smooth the canvas – or face – before you apply foundation or concealer, it ups your make-up’s staying power so it’s less likely to settle into fine lines throughout the day,” she explained.
“Primers, used under face make-up, can be formulated with hydrating ingredients such as that create a glowing canvas to distract eyes from those fine lines.
“Opting for a silicone primer can reduce the appearance of heavily wrinkled areas such as smile lines and crow’s feet.”
Lastly, Saffron explained how lipstick can make a difference to one’s lips – using a lipstick that’s too dark draws attention to thinner lips, she said.
The make-up artist continued: “Our lips become thinner and lose their definition as we age. Although it’s tempting to overdraw the lips in order to give the illusion or a fuller pout, it’s better to ease away from darker shades.
“Lining your lips with a colour that’s one or two shades bolder than a person’s natural lip colour, then follow up with a lipgloss. Gloss catching the light gives the illusion of fuller, younger looking lips.”
