A 50-year-old woman has revealed how she finally has the confidence to wear shorts after undergoing a non-surgical procedure to lift her ‘saggy’ knees.

Competitive cyclist Nikki Chandler, from Hertfordshire, said she felt years feeling self-conscious of her legs.

She spends three hours a day cycling, yet despite being fit and healthy could not tone her droopy knees. She blamed years of running for causing trauma and swelling to her knees, which in turn led to sagging skin.

Nikki decided to take action and visited plastic surgeon, Dr Angelica Kavouni who recommended Thermage FLX procedure – the UK’s leading radiofrequency treatment which addresses the visible signs of aging in minutes. Left: Nikki’s knee before treatment. Right: Nikki’s knee after treatment

‘I’ve always been looking for a way to improve my knees for years, I’ve always been sporty and I used to run a lot,’ she said.

‘That’s why I got into cycling about seven years ago, to reduce the impact on the knees.

‘But whilst my knees improved health wise, the years of trauma and swelling left its toll and I was left with sagging skin around them, which I really hated.

‘I spent my life in cycling shorts and being at the start of a race alongside a 20-year-old made me feel incredibly self-conscious.’

While she wore cycling shorts to race, in her private life she could never muster the confidence to have her knees on display.

After Covid hit, Nikki decided it was time to take action and was recommended a pioneering, non-surgical procedure by plastic surgeon Dr Angelica Kavouni.

Thermage FLX is a treatment that targets the skin’s dermis layer, where collagen fibres are found, and uses patented radiofrequency that delivers a uniform heating effect that penetrates deep into the collagen-rich layers of the skin.

In turn, this gentle heating causes existing collagen tissue to tighten, stimulates the production of new collagen, and helps to define contours.

Nikki immediately saw the benefits, saying that her skin looked tighter and more lifted.

‘After years of felling self-conscious about my knees I can’t wait to show them off in shorts this summer and now when I’m on the starting line in my lyrca I feel more confident that ever,’ she said.

Nikki’s (pictured with Dr Angelica Kavouni) treatment took about an hour and a half in total and she was awake and watching the entire time. Nikki noticed the results immediately, seeing that the skin around her knees looked tighter and lifted from the single treatment.

Dr Kavouni (www.ionkavounilondon.com) has seen a 200 per cent increase in interest in treatments targeting knees and elbows, which can often be one of the first places to show signs of ageing.

She says: ‘A lot of people have spent time getting fit during the pandemic and now wish to tighten skin, others have taken time to research treatments that they may not have otherwise had time to look into.

‘The knees and elbows are one of the first places to really start to show our age. The knees in particular take on a lot of stress because they are a weight-bearing area and they have to constantly bend, so the skin is always having to stretch.

‘This, along with aging, sun exposure and volume loss, can lead to loose skin around the knees.

‘Sagginess can also be attributed to a lack of hydration, which is why it’s important to keep your skin moisturized, as well as protected from the sun.’
