Conquer your hay fever with these tips and deals as the pollen count rises

FEELING the sneeze? The Met Office predicts high tree-pollen levels this week as the weather improves.

That means hell for hay fever sufferers, not least because the cost of medication adds up.

As it is Allergy Awareness Week, I asked hay fever expert Dr Beverley Adams- Groom and Lloyds Pharmacy’s Anshu Kaura for some advice.

These are their tips and I some of my own . . .

PLAN AHEAD: Dr Beverley says: “Use pollen calendars to find out which types kids may be affected by. Then you can pre-treat the expected allergy, starting two weeks in advance with medication. They then may get very few symptoms.”

My tip: Head to metoffice.gov.uk to see the free pollen calendar.

SUNNIES OUTLOOK: Anshu explains: “If you get itchy eyes, wear sunglasses on days with high pollen counts. Those with a wrap-around effect are best.”

My tip: Treat yourself to designer sunglasses from TK Maxx. They now have up to 60 per cent off the RRP.

WASH INDOORS: “Giving your child a shower after being outside is helpful,” says Dr Beverley, “as it gets pollen off but also cleanses the air in the shower.”

My tip: Towie’s Sam Faiers has launched a baby and child skin and haircare range at Tesco. Get Knightley’s Adventure strawberry and coconut shampoo and bodywash for £3.

CLOSE CALL: Anshu says: “Keep windows shut. This is important in early morning and evening when pollen is released.”

My tip: For more help like this, head to allergyuk.org.

CREATE A SANCTUARY: Dr Beverley says: “Make one room a pollen-free sanctuary. Keep doors and windows shut and run an air purifier.”

My tip: The Dimplex air purifier is good value, £49.99 at argos.co.uk.
