Cruise ship passenger discovers pineapple stickers on cabin doors

Cruise ship passenger makes a startling discovery about ‘mysterious’ fruit stickers on cabin doors: ‘Everyone needs to know this’

  • A travel blogger has shared details about a free cruise ship she went on
  • Dominique noticed that plenty of the cabin doors had upside down pineapples
  • She didn’t realise this was a secret symbol used by swingers
  • It was later explained: ‘It means drop-ins are most welcome… and bring friends’

A travel blogger has detailed her surprise at learning what the upside down pineapple symbol represents after spotting them on cabin doors on a cruise ship.

Dominique, from the US, was invited on board a cruise liner for free as part of her content creation obligations, when she noted that many of the rooms were adorned with a pineapple sticker.

‘When you’re on your first cruise and you see that everyone has these cute pineapples on their door,’ she said. ‘I wonder what’s the occasion?’

Typically pineapples, particularly an ‘upside down’ version, is a secret sign used by swingers to identify each other in public.

‘Those people are swinging. I learned that at a young age from my first cruise,’ one commenter told her.

‘It means, drop-ins are most welcome… and bring friends,’ another woman said.

Another added: ‘It’s a swinger’s symbol. They have swingers clubs on cruises. I’ve been on enough to know.’

Brittany Lewin, from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, found out the hard way when she discovered that her wrist tattoo – when viewed from various angles as an upside down pineapple – is actually a secret sign.

In her now viral video Brittany shared screenshots of a chat she and a follower were having when they asked if her tattoo was in fact an upside down pineapple.

Brittany sent a photo to confirm that it was an upright pineapple when her arm is down, although the follower giggled after finding out the secret meaning.

The TikTok star was encouraged to research what an upside-down pineapple meant and discovered that it’s a symbol for someone who is in search of a swinger partner.

‘I’ve made a mistake besties,’ Brittany wrote in the video caption.

She was left mortified and completely shocked that after posting stories on social media daily with her tattoo showing that no one else ever told her.

‘I’ve thought this every video I’ve seen of you. I just thought each to their own,’ a follower wrote.

‘Every time I see the tattoo I was thinking to myself ‘does she know’,’ another wrote.

‘I always thought you and James were just into some extra fun stuff lol, I’m sad that you didn’t actually know,’ another jokingly wrote.

‘Just turn [the tattoo] into Spongebob’s house and add some sea shells,’ another suggested.

What you need to know about the upside down pineapple symbol

A pineapple left on a door step is a known symbol in swinger circles to let neighbours know you’re in ‘the lifestyle’.

As a tattoo it represents hospitality and a welcoming environment but an upside down pineapple is known to signify you are either a swinger or looking for a swinger party to attend.

Hidden upside down pineapple symbols have been spotted in cruise ships and hotels to capture the attention of those with aligned interests.
