If you feel like 2021 slipped right between your fingers, you’re not alone. This year moved remarkably quickly (maybe because we’re still in the midst of a global pandemic…). And the pace of your day-to-day isn’t about to change anytime soon, because the last few weeks of the year are loaded with so much cosmic motion, it will certainly pack a punch. Yes, darling, ‘tis the season—eclipse season!
We have two powerful eclipses taking place on Friday, November 19 and Saturday, December 4. Eclipses are always very big deals, but these two are especially notable because they correspond with beginnings and endings, respectively: The lunar eclipse in November is the first on the Taurus-Scorpio axis, while the solar eclipse in December is the final eclipse on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis.

WTF IS AN ECLIPSE?
Although we track dozens of the planets and celestial bodies in astrology, the Sun and Moon (traditionally known as the “luminaries”) are the most tangible. We interact with them on a daily basis: The Sun’s consistent performance and the Moon’s corresponding pirouette anchor us to the solar system, reminding us of the great celestial forces that connect us all. From an astrological perspective, the Sun represents identity, ego, and external conditions, while the Moon symbolizes our emotions, internal truths, and the ways in which we crave nurture and protection.
Just as the Earth rotates around the Sun, the Moon also spins around the Earth, twisting through space on its own elliptic orbit. Like a dreidel, the Moon slightly pivots as it twirls. The limits of the Moon’s rotations are referred to as the lunar nodes, and they correspond with the upper and lower edges of the Moon’s elliptic. Also, it just so happens that when the Moon aligns with these lunar nodes, it creates a perfect alignment with the Sun and Earth, resulting in (you guessed it!) solar and lunar eclipses.
Eclipses always come in sets of two, corresponding with the Moon’s phases. During a normal New Moon, the Sun and Moon align in the sky. When the lunar nodes are involved, however, that New Moon becomes a solar eclipse: the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, temporarily blocking the Sun from our view. And the Full Moon—which occurs when the Sun and Moon meet at opposite sides of the heavens—becomes a lunar eclipse, when the Earth wedges itself between the Sun and Moon, casting a dark red shadow (known as an “umbra”) onto the Moon. This eerie hue is why lunar eclipses are often referred to as “Blood Moons.” That’s right, folks, spooky season isn’t over yet!
WHAT DO ECLIPSES EVEN DO?
There is a lot of powerful mythology associated with the Moon’s lunar nodes. In astrology, these upper and lower bounds are referred to as the North Node and South Node, and they symbolize destiny, purpose, and even former lives. It’s important to note that in your birth chart, the Nodes are always opposite each other, forming a powerful dynamic between your past (South Node) and your future (North Node). Accordingly, any planetary activity on either Node activates the entire axis, launching profound transformation and metamorphosis in every corner of your life. You know, NBD!
But it’s these powerful North and South Nodes that make eclipses so incredibly powerful. Because eclipses correspond with these placements, they signify major, abrupt change on both an individual and collective level. Eclipses are believed to speed up fate and expedite the inevitable. For instance, if you’ve been kicking around the idea of quitting your job and starting your own business but don’t have a clear timeline, eclipses are extremely likely to raise the stakes and turn that “maybe one day” into RIGHT F*CKING NOW. Eclipses raise the stakes on everything.
It’s important to remember, however, that eclipses won’t make anything happen that wasn’t meant to be—eclipses don’t create new circumstances, they just accelerate the plot lines of already existing narratives. And you don’t need to be scared of eclipse season. Not only are these celestial happenings inevitable (we experience four to seven eclipses every year), but they actually help you access your destiny. Eclipses want you to live your best life, so if anything is not in alignment (professionally, romantically, interpersonally, emotionally, etc.), the eclipses will ignite major changes to make room for better opportunities. WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH *THESE* ECLIPSES?
So let’s talk about the specific eclipses in winter 2021. What do they mean? What do they do? Will you be okay? (Spoiler: Yes!)
First up, we have a lunar eclipse at 27º of Taurus on Friday, November 19 at 3:57AM EST. As previously mentioned, lunar eclipses coincide with Full Moons, so this means the Sun and Moon will be aligning at opposite ends of the sky, with the Earth positioned between these two luminaries. Lunar eclipses are associated with emotions, so it’s likely that during this eclipse, you’ll begin to look at your internal narrative from a different point of view.
Perhaps even more importantly, however, this lunar eclipse marks the beginning of a brand new eclipse cycle. From now through October 2023 (!!!), there will be seven eclipses across the Taurus-Scorpio axis, collectively referred to as an “eclipse series.” Because this Taurus-Scorpio eclipse series is just getting started, pay extra attention to events that take place mid-November: What types of situations are you encountering? Who is showing up in your life? What are your hopes and wishes? What are your pain points and disappointments? The Taurus-Scorpio axis is associated with themes surrounding stability and intimacy, so when in doubt, be sure to dial into these topics. Consider documenting your current circumstances in a journal, as these very dynamics are guaranteed to go through radical metamorphosis over the next two years!
The second eclipse, on the other hand, marks a conclusion. The solar eclipse will take place at 2:43AM EST on Friday, December 4 at 12º Sagittarius. Solar eclipses align with New Moons, meaning the Sun and Moon will be occupying the same area in the sky and—if you’re on the path of totality during the daytime (the diagonal geographic stretch associated with the exact eclipse)—you’ll experience the obstruction of the Sun as light is temporarily blocked by the Moon’s motion. Symbolically, this means that we are compelled to change our external conditions and from an astrological perspective, this is an invitation to take action.
This solar eclipse is connected to the eclipse series that started way back in the year that should not be named (okay: 2020. *shudder*). Beginning on June 5, 2020, eclipses across the Gemini-Sagittarius axis began illuminating topics relating to information, philosophy, community, and expansion. There were six eclipses total in this series (previous dates include June 5, 2020; November 30, 2020; December 14, 2020; May 26, 2021; June 10, 2021). Now’s a time to look back: How have these themes transformed in your life? What have you learned? Fundamentally, this final eclipse is about integrating that wisdom into your reality, so don’t be afraid to take a big, bold step!
