Expert shares mouth taping warning as TikTokers use hack to help them sleep

A sleep expert has shared a warning about mouth taping after TikTok users are using the hack to help them sleep.

Mouth taping is a technique where you use medical tape to seal your mouth shut while you sleep.

The idea behind it is to encourage nasal breathing and prevent mouth breathing during sleep, which is believed to reduce snoring and improve sleep quality.

While there is limited research on mouth taping specifically, there are a few areas in which mouth taping could benefit your sleep, according to Martin Seeley, Sleep Expert and CEO of mattressnextday.

He said nasal breathing can have benefits, as breathing through your nose helps to warm and humidify

the air before it reaches your lungs, which can reduce dryness and irritation in your airways.

Nasal breathing also helps to filter out dust, allergens and other particles that can irritate your respiratory system.

However, he also warned mouth breathing can lead to snoring and sleep disturbances.

Martin also warned mouth taping may not be appropriate for everyone – especially people with certain medical conditions, such as sleep apnea or asthma, as it may exacerbate these conditions.

"It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before trying mouth taping to ensure that it is safe for you," he said.

Martin said alternative methods to encourage nasal breathing could be effective, such as nasal strips or dilators, practicing breathing exercises, and addressing any underlying causes of nasal congestion.

If you are considering using mouth tape to help you sleep, he's shared some tips on how to use it

safely and effectively.

1. Choose the right tape

It is important to use medical-grade tape that is specifically designed for mouth taping. This type of tape is typically hypoallergenic, gentle on the skin and easy to remove.

2. Practice during the day

Before using mouth tape at night, it can be helpful to practice during the day to get used to the sensation of breathing through your nose.

3. Apply the tape correctly

To apply the tape, tear off the strip that is long enough to reach from one side of your mouth to

the other. Then place the tape horizontally across your lips, making sure it is not too tight or too loose.

4. Use the right amount of tape

You don't ant to use too much tape, as this can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to breathe. On the other hand, using too little tape may not be effective in preventing mouth breathing. Aim for a strip of tape that is just wide enough to cover your lips comfortably.

5. Remove the tape gently

When you wake up in the morning, remove the tape gently to avoid irritation or discomfort. You can use warm water or oil to help remove any residue.

6. Don't use mouth tape if you have certain medical conditions mouth taping should not be used by people with sleep apnea.

While there is limited research on mouth taping, it may be beneficial for some people who struggle with mouth breathing during sleep. However, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional to determine if it is safe and appropriate for you. Additionally, alternative methods may also be effective in promoting nasal breathing and improving sleep quality.
