Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry‘s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey has continued to make headlines ever since the two-hour special aired on March 7. Now, the interviewer’s best friend and journalist Gayle King has given an update on where things currently stand with the couple and the royal family.
Here’s what King had to say about that and whether or not any of Harry’s family members have spoken to Meghan since the interview.
Meghan and Harry spoke about their relationship with other royals
During the primetime special, Harry stated that he has great respect for Queen Elizabeth and has spoken to his grandmother several times since stepping down as a senior royal. Meghan added that the queen had always been nothing but kind to her. She also said that her sister-in-law Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is a “good person.”
When it comes to the Duke of Sussex’s brother, Prince William, and his father, Prince Charles, Harry said that he hopes to repair those relationships.
Prince Harry had conversations with Prince William and Prince Charles
A few days after the interview aired in the U.K., Prince William directly responded to the race allegations, telling a Sky News reporter: “We are very much not a racist family.” The Duke of Cambridge was then asked if he had spoken to his brother at that time. “No, I haven’t spoken to him yet but I will do,” William replied.
During an episode of CBS This Morning, King revealed that Harry, William, and Charles have all talked recently.
“I did actually call them [the Sussexes] to see how they were feeling and it’s true Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too,” King said. “The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive but they are glad that they have at least started a conversation. And I think what is still upsetting to them is that the palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately.”
Have any of Harry’s relatives talked to Meghan since the interview?
After King’s revelation that Harry talked to some of his family, many wondered if the duchess had spoken to any of her in-laws. According to King: “no one in the royal family has talked to Meghan yet, at this particular time.”
Since the interview aired, many royal fans and commentators have been split on what to believe but King claimed that Meghan apparently has “documents to back up everything that she said on Oprah’s interview.”
In a statement on March 9, Buckingham Palace said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
