How to change your recommended content on Netflix, YouTube and Prime

YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video suggesting too many Christmas movies? Here’s how you can tweak your recommended content

  • Netflix and others base suggested content on what you watched in the past
  • But they can show unwanted content – if others have been using your profile
  • Users can tweak their settings in order to better cater to their suggested shows – but there are four popular streaming services that don’t let you do so

With Christmas just around the corner, you may be growing tired of having holiday movies pop up as suggested viewing when you turn the TV on.

Suggested shows and movies help viewers pick from a seemingly endless selection of content.

But they can also feel like they have been picked at random. Sometimes that they reflect what you like watched years ago – or they are based on shows other memebrs of your family have been viedwing.

But the good news is that it is possible to tweak your settings on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube in order to reset the automatic recommendations that appear.

But other streaming giants, including Disney+, Hulu, Max and Peacock do not offer the option to alter your settings.

You can influence what is suggested on your Netflix landing page by clicking on the Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down icon, the company said

The quickest way to refresh your Netflix recommendations is to delete your watch history, according to The Washington Post.

You can do this by going to your Account settings under the drop down menu on the top right hand corner of the screen.

Under Profile and Parental Controls, click on your profile, and then scroll to Viewing activity.

If you click on View, it will display everything you have ever watched on Netflix. You can then delete any specific shows, or scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘hide all’ to delete your entire watch history.

These shows and movies will then no longer influence what is recommended to you.

Netflix told the outlet that your ratings, the trailers you watch, any reminders you set for upcoming releases and the shows you add to ‘My List’ influence what appears in your recommendations.

You can influence what is suggested on your Netflix landing page by clicking on the Thumbs Up icon -or the Double Thumbs Up icon for programs you loved – or the Thumbs Down icon if you did not enjoy a show.

Amazon Prime Video bases recommended content on your watch history, the company said

Prime Video

To reset your recommendations, log into your account from a web browser and click into ‘Account & Settings’ in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Click on Watch History, and you can delete some or all of the content you have watched on Prime Video.

When the platform presents a variety of shows it recommends, you can also choose to ‘hide’ specific shows, which will also alter what appears in the future.

YouTube also bases recommended content on videos you ‘like’, or ones you say you are ‘not interested in’

The best way to alter your suggested content on the video streaming platform is by logging into the YouTube smartphone app, The Washington Post reports.

Click on ‘You’ on the lower right hand corner, and then click on settings and then ‘Manage All History.’

Here, you can either delete specific videos, delete your entire watch history or remove content that you watched over a certain time period – whether that is a day, a month or a year.

Or you can turn off your history entirely, which means YouTube will not suggest any videos based on things you have watched before.

YouTube also told the outlet that it bases recommended content on videos you ‘like’, or ones you say you are ‘not interested in’, so this can be an effective way of improving what pops up when you visit the site.
