I'm a doctor – here's my trick to PREVENT a hangover before it strikes | The Sun

THERE'S nothing fun about having a hangover.

Head in the toilet bowl, followed by hours of a pounding head and if you're lucky, you might be able to hold something down.

For most people, the more they drink, the worse the hangover is the next day.

While many have their own ideas when it comes to what really cures a hangover, one doctor has revealed a trick to prevent it.

Taking to TikTok, Dr Karan Rajan was responding to one user who claimed that having a spoonful of olive oil before drinking stops you from getting drunk and having a hangover.

The guru said that this isn't the case, but said there is rhyme and reason behind having a high fat meal before boozing.

Expert reveals why some people get raging hangovers – and how you can fix it

I’m a doctor and this is the only way to really get over your hangover

He explained that drinking alcohol mixed with diet soda gets you drunk faster than if you were to have it with regular pop.

This is because about 20 per cent of the alcohol is absorbed in the stomach.

"Around 80 per cent is absorbed in the small intestine.

"So you can actually get drunk slower, by slowing the rate at which alcohol enters the small intestine and you can do this by having a meal with some fat," he explained.

Dr Rajan said that this delays gastric emptying.

He explained that this is the speed in which the stomach empties its contents into the small intestine.

"So the alcohol now mixed with the food, stays in the stomach for longer before entering the intestine and this reduces the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the blood stream."

In the comments section he added that the only way to get less drunk is to drink less.

Another expert previously said that there are different reasons as to why some don't get a hangover.

Lara, founder of Wholistic Health by Lara said while being dehydrated is a major part of having a hangover, the whole picture is a lot more complex.

Lara said our genes are partly to blame for frequency and hangover severity.

The guru cited a 1972 study on 14,000 twins that found a 50 per cent correlation between how likely they were to drink, how severe the hangover was and other factors such as health, nutrition, medications and drug use.

“Another study on nearly 5,000 twins found a 40-45 per cent genetic influence over hangover frequency and hangover resistance,'' she added.

She also said that alcohol poisoning and diet all have a a role to play.

She said good nutritional practices are important because booze depletes nutrients including vitamin B.

Considering a good multi-vitamin, such as Evity multivitamins, which contains B Vitamins alongside vitamin C and D, selenium, zinc – helpful across the spectrum.

“Rich food sources of B-vitamins, anti-inflammatory antioxidants (and other nutrients!) can also be found in avocados and beans (red, black, pinto), so including these in your diet can support cognition and reduce post-binge blues.”

Lara added that Omega-3 is also a key nutrient for reducing inflammation.
