The clue is in the ‘do!
There is buzz on Broadway that Lin-Manuel Miranda will return to star in “Hamilton” when the show reopens. And hair’s the thing — the key to the comeback could be the star’s growing locks.
Said a theater source: “He did a TV interview over the weekend, and it was noticeable that he was growing his hair out. The gossip on Broadway is that he is growing his hair so he can star as ‘Hamilton’ when Broadway returns.”
Another theater source also told us that there is buzz Miranda, 41, will return to the musical that made him a breakout star.
In a recent NBC News interview with Lester Holt, Miranda is indeed seen sporting an impressive man bun atop his head.
When he exited the role of Alexander Hamilton in 2016, the star immediately cut his hair and debuted his newly shorn look at the goodbye party.
Miranda had grown out his hair for the part when he originally created the role, though his replacement, Javier Muñoz, then opted for a wig.
Back in 2016, Miranda hinted he could return to the role periodically, saying at the Tonys, “I have written a role I can’t age out of … I intend to drop-in on this, over and over again. Cut to 20 years from now and you’ll be like, ‘Lin, when will you stop playing Hamilton?’”
Seems like it could be sooner rather than later.
Sources have said that “Hamilton” is angling to be the first show to return to Broadway since the pandemic hit. Page Six reported that the show’s producers were hoping to throw open the door of the Richard Rodgers Theatre on July 4.
Reports this week said that most shows would not return until they can reopen at full capacity in September.
Miranda recently performed to launch a Times Square vaccination site, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe for a filmed version of the show.
A rep for Miranda did not get back to us.
