His resignation sparked mass protests in Cairo and throughout the Arab world, which prompted him to retract it just three hours later. Nasser would continue in power until his death from a heart attack in 1970.

88 years ago (1934) Italy beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the second World Cup final in Rome.

The 1934 tournament was the first in which teams had to qualify to take part.

Thirty-two entered the contest and 16 went through to the finals.

World champions Uruguay refused to take part after all but four European teams snubbed their invitation to the 1930 tournament.

22 years ago (2000) The Millennium Bridge across the River Thames was forced to close on its opening day after it began swaying in the wind under the weight of hundreds of pedestrians.

It was shut for modifications three days later and didn’t reopen until 2002.
