Martin Lewis explains trick to save £200 on your holiday – even if you’ve already booked

With the summer well and truly here, many Brits may be planning to head off for a much needed holiday.

But with the cost of living on the rise, it’s also a time when people up and down the country are looking for ways to reduce their spending where possible.

Fortunately, money expertMartin Lewis has revealed how holidaymakers can save £200 on their holiday – even after it’s been booked.

While it may sound impossible, the secret is to keep a tab on hotel prices to find out if they decrease before you’re due to travel.

If your hotel book has free cancellation and you see that the price has lowered since you booked, it may be worth cancelling your current booking and then rebooking at the lower price.

Sharing the tip on, 50 year old Martin explained: “If the price of your hotel has dropped and your booking allows free cancellation, simply rebook for less.

“Check the latest prices on comparison sites Skyscanner, Kayak, and TripAdvisor – and keep checking before you go.”

And one happy holidaymaker took to Twitter to share her success following Martin’s advice.

“I saved £200 when the price dropped two days before travel,” the social media user wrote.

As always, it’s important to check your booking’s terms and conditions in case there are any booking charges or unwanted fees attached to cancelling.

Alternatively, it’s also worth seeing if the website you have booked with provides a price match guarantee.

If so, this typically means that they will refund the difference in price if you find the same room type and terms for cheaper.

According to Martin’s money saving website, such websites include, Ebookers,, and HotelsCombined.

The news comes after the money saving expert previously revealed how a smart airport hack could save travellers hundreds of pounds this summer.

During a discussion about airport parking on an episode of the Martin Lewis Money Show Live, he emphasised the importance of booking ahead, no matter how long in advance that may be.

“Parking at the airport, book ahead. Even if it's on the day,” he said.

“Given an example, we found one case where, if you turn up at Manchester Airport and paid there it's £400 for the week.

“If you had pre-booked that morning, it was £130. Better still, if you had booked earlier, there are comparison sites for that too.”
