A model maker himself, Satnam Bhogal was right at home in his role as Model Maker Man.

He sat down with Sun Bingo to talk about what models he’s made, his first memories of going to his local bingo hall and where he’d go if he could time travel to the past.

Meet Satnam Bhogal!

Satnam Bhogal – Model Maker Man

Have you ever made a model?

Yes I have! When I was around 10/11, my brother and I were mad about model making, making aeroplanes in particular.

There was a brand called “Airfix” and they made models for Spitfires, Harrier Jump Jets, F-111s, tanks… one of the biggest ones that took me quite a while to do was, I think, a BMW R1 motorbike.

I was really into model making. I did it for a long time. In the scene, I had the bolts and the instructions, that plastic sheet with all the pieces in.

All the pieces are held in little bits of plastic and you basically snap them off.

You saw a little bit of that in the scene.

It brought me back to that time when I used to spend hours and hours and hours making the models.

When you open the box, you look at the instructions and you just want to make it.

You want to get to the end and have the finished model. My dad would then get some Blu Tack or Sellotape and we’d hang them from the ceiling in our bedroom.

With the aeroplane models, you’d get a stand. You could put them on shelves then.

The ones that we suspended, we painted, so they looked much better suspended from the ceiling.

Do your friends and family know that you’re in the Sun Bingo TV ad or will it be a surprise?

My wife knows. I think the kids know.

Apart from that, not really.

Normally, I tend to wait for the transmission date and when it comes, the texts start coming in: “Is that you?” or “I’ve just seen you!”.

HOW TO PLAY POWER OF GODS VALHALLA

What’s your experience of bingo and slot games?

A long time ago, growing up, I would go with a friend of mine because his mum was playing bingo at the local bingo hall.

I walked in and there was a bingo caller and he was saying all these names and doing the rhyming calls.

The tables were packed!

Everybody seemed to know everybody. There was a bar at the back.

That’s my first memory of bingo. By the end, I had sussed it out and realised that it was a game where people could win some money.

It wasn’t big money, but enough to buy some fish and chips on a Friday.

That was my first introduction to bingo in its original format.

What brings you luck in life?

Oh that’s a difficult one! I’m not sure. There’s no one specific thing.

I don’t have an object that I carry or a paper that I read or recite.

I might do the odd little prayer in my head or something.

Sometimes, it might be a little something that I say to myself like “just do the best that you can”.

I think it’s more about the simple things for me.

Which of the Sun Bingo rooms would you like to play in?

I’d quite like the Glamour Room. Maybe the Grease Room. Or a combination of the two.

Grease, I would play in because of the genre of disco.

But, the Glamour Room, it’s theatre.

You’d go there if you want to be wowed by something. It’s something that’s not an everyday thing, I imagine perhaps velvet cushions everywhere, and the room is decadent.

GRAB YOUR BREW AND BICCY, LET'S PLAY BINGO!

I like to think that I’m going into a room that installs a little bit of glamour, a little pick-me-up.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

For me, it would be the era of disco – the 70s!

The flares, the big afros, big collars, disco music, the lifestyle of dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. I love the music.

I think it was just a very happy time, possibly.

One of my favourite films is Saturday Night Fever, and I could never get fed up of that film.

The disco era. Studio 54. I’ve seen lots of documentaries about how that club was born and how people were queuing up around three or four blocks just to get in.

They didn’t know whether they would get in or not, but they just wanted the chance to get a place inside Studio 54.
