NBC News chief White House correspondent Kristen Welker is expecting her first child — a baby girl — via surrogacy.
Welker, 44, and husband John Hughes, 47, announced the joyful news on “Today” Friday morning.
“After years and years of trying, I’m having a baby girl with John and we are so excited,” she told her colleagues and viewers.
While the couple confirmed that their surrogate was pregnant before Welker moderated the final presidential debate of 2020, the “Weekend Today” co-host and Hughes waited until Infertility Awareness Week to share the news in an effort to give hope to other couples struggling to conceive.
Welker also shared a letter she wrote to their unborn daughter that she hopes “will one day explain her extraordinary journey and tell the story of how much her daddy and I have always dreamed about becoming parents,” she tweeted Friday morning.
“Your daddy and I have learned so many lessons trying to bring you here and we want to share them with you,” she wrote. “Every journey is unique; don’t compare yourself to others. There will be heartbreaks in life; some won’t ever fully heal, others will make you stronger. It is OK to ask for help; in fact, it can be empowering. Families are made in all different ways, come in all different shapes and sizes, and all families should be celebrated.
“And, finally, while I didn’t carry you in my body, I have always carried you in my heart and I will always be your mommy,” she added.
The broadcast journo went on to tweet that the baby is due in June.
“After years of really tough infertility struggles, my husband, John, and I are so thrilled to share that, with the help of a surrogate, we will welcome a baby girl and become a family of three in June,” she captioned a photo of her touching her surrogate’s baby bump.
