Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco have formally denied ‘the malicious rumours’ that they are separating after almost 12 years of marriage.

The 44-year-old Olympic swimmer met Prince Albert at a sporting event in 2007 and the couple announced their engagement in 2010.

Charlene was absent from Monaco for most of 2021 while having medical treatment in her native South Africa, and was admitted to a Swiss clinic to be treated for exhaustion on her return.

She’s now back in full swing with royal duties and public appearances, but French magazine ROYAUTÉ has claimed that the Prince and Princess are in the process of separation.

The Palace’s press office said they ‘formally deny the malicious rumours peddled by the magazine.

A spokesperson said: ‘I would like to formally deny the malicious rumors peddled by the French magazine Royauté. Please disregard this article which is totally unfounded.’

The rumour gained momentum when the article was repeated by gossip sites, which sparked speculation on social media.

The royal couple married in July 2011 and in 2014 they went onto have two children, eight-year-old twins, Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella.

The twins also have two half siblings Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, who was born in 1992, with real estate agent Tamara Rotolo.

She was confirmed as Prince Albert’s daughter in 2006 when she was almost 16-years-old.

In 2005 the prince also confirmed he was the biological father of Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste, born in 2003, whose mother is Nicole Coste, a former Air France flight attendant from Togo.

Albert, the only son of Hollywood legend Grace Kelly – tragically killed at the age of 52- who was married to his late father, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, still enjoys an ongoing close relationship with former lover Coste – now a glamorous fashion designer; indeed the pair appeared at a charity ball together last year.

Despite not growing up with their biological father, both adult children have adopted the regal Grimaldi surname, and clearly have an increasingly close relationship with the prince, despite the fact it’s believed that he only acknowledged them both following DNA tests.

Despite the divorce rumours Prince Albert confirmed they will be both be attending King Charles’ coronation in May.

The royal spoke fondly of the British King ahead of his 6 May coronation, calling him ‘a very educated man and someone with a great sense of humour’.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Albert confirmed he and his wife Princess Charlene would attend, adding: ‘I’m certain that it’s going to be an incredible ceremony and a very moving one.’

The event will be amongst the highest profile attended by Charlene since her recent illness, which saw her spending 11 months away from the Mediterranean principality in her native South Africa, undergoing treatment for an unspecified condition.

Albert added: ‘We’ve maintained contact since His Majesty became King, but I haven’t talked to him personally since the Queen’s funeral.’
