Prince Harry’s life has changed drastically in the last year. After a tumultuous period with his family, Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, decided to step down from their roles as senior members of the royal family. Shortly after that, they moved to America, giving the royals no time to repair the rifts that had been created by the decision.
The rift between Prince Harry and the royals
Harry started separating from his family when they had reservations about Meghan. According to Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of A Modern Royal Family, William urged Harry to slow down in his relationship with Meghan to make sure he wasn’t “blinded by lust.”
“‘Don’t feel you need to rush this,’ William told Harry, according to sources. ‘Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl,’” royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote in the book.
But Harry went full steam ahead with the relationship. This caused an obvious rift between the brothers and by the summer of 2017, Harry had even stopped his frequent visits to Prince George and Princess Charlotte
“Though it was not necessarily her responsibility, Kate did little to bridge the divide,” the book reads. “She was fiercely loyal to her husband and his family.”
“William and Kate’s feelings seemed obvious to the Sussexes that summer and beyond,” the book states. “Among all the friends and family Harry and Meghan hosted at their house in Oxfordshire between May 2018 and March 2019, the Cambridges failed to visit.”
Harry even later admitted to there being issues with his brother in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.
“Inevitably stuff happens,” he said.” But we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment. I’ll always be there for him and as I know, he’ll always be there for me. We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy but I love him dearly.”
Prince Harry is still heartbroken
William and Harry have come a long way since Harry left his royal position. They now speak fairly often but Harry’s friend, Tom Bradby, recently said that Harry is still “heartbroken” by the situation.
“I think they are feeling better, yes. So are they unhappy? No, I think they are content, the things they are doing they are quite excited by,” Bradby said of Harry and Meghan on Love Your Weekend, according to People. “I think he is heartbroken by the situation with his family. You don’t necessarily need to have knowledge to know that, but I think it is true.
“The situation with the family clearly isn’t ideal and it has been a very difficult year for them all, but are they unhappy out there? No, I don’t think that’s right,” he continued. “I think they are pretty happy actually, but I think they wrestle with their position in life, I think they all do. I think William does too, I don’t think he finds it easy.”
As Meghan and Harry are planning to return to the U.K. in June, Harry and William may have a chance to work on their relationship even more.
