A 63-pound pup who was deemed ‘too big’ and ‘too strong’ has finally found his forever home after an ‘unlucky streak’ of 14 failed adoptions.
Ronald, a playful mixed breed, was transferred to the SPCA of Wake County, a non-profit animal rescue in Raleigh, North Carolina, from a nearby municipal shelter on December 7, 2022, Fox News reported.
Within a month, the one-year-old went home with three different families for trial adoptions and was requested by 11 others, but his boisterous energy and size seemed to be a turnoff for potential owners.
‘He is basically your typical puppy. He is playful and clumsy and goofy and still learning his manners,’ Samantha Ranlet, a spokesperson for SPCA of Wake County, told the outlet.

Samantha Ranlet, a spokesperson for SPCA of Wake County, told Fox News that Ronald was ‘just a lot for people’ because he is ‘so big and still a ‘clumsy puppy’
‘But because he is just so big — that in combination with his clumsy puppy behavior was just a lot for people.’
The SPCA of Wake County turned to Facebook on January 11 to share Ronald’s story along with photos of the sweet pup.
‘Help us break Ronald’s unlucky streak! 14 adoptions have fallen through for this lovely guy — mostly due to being too big/strong,’ the team wrote. ‘It’s true, he’s a big boy! But for his large frame, he only weighs 63 lbs.’
The SPCA of Wake County went on to describe the pup’s many endearing attributes, including his aptitude for learning.
‘Ronald knows his commands, takes treats super gently, and is 100% sweet. He truly is a very good boy,’ the animal rescue shared. ‘Now and then, if he gets excited, he might stand up and put his front paws on you or become a little mouthy. But he is a big puppy, after all!

The animal rescue received over 800 messages from people inquiring about adopting him, including Kiersten Davis, a nurse and mother of two
Davis and her husband, Corey Pierce, have two young sons, Kason and Cohen, as well as a three-year-old Australian Shepherd, Billie
‘As soon as I brought him home and saw him with the boys and our other dog, I knew we would finalize the adoption,’ Davis told Fox News
‘As long as you have reasonably sturdy footing, you’ll have no problem with Ronald. Plus, he loves treats and practicing his tricks, so he’ll be a great student for any training.’
The post went viral and has been shared nearly 70,000 times on Facebook, where dog lovers flocked to the comments to gush over the dog.
Ranlet told Fox News that they received over 800 messages from people inquiring about adopting him, including Kiersten Davis.
The nurse from Raeford, North Carolina, and her husband, Corey Pierce, have two young sons, Kason and Cohen, as well as a three-year-old Australian Shepherd, Billie.
After being put on a waitlist, Davis was contacted by the SPCA of Wake County and told that Ronald’s latest adoption had fallen through. She left work early and drove to Raleigh that day to pick him up.

The shelter also thanked the tens of thousands of people who shared the original post about Ronald, saying ‘his whole world changed’ overnight
‘As soon as I brought him home and saw him with the boys and our other dog, I knew we would finalize the adoption,’ she told Fox News.
The family officially adopted Ronald on January 17, six days after he went viral.
The SPCA of Wake County celebrated the news with a heartwarming Facebook post featuring snapshots of Ronald in his new home and getting a hug from Davis’s four-year-old son.
