The malnourished pup, named Curry, was taken to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary after being rescued from the west Cornwall coast last month. He had mouth ulcers, a large swelling on one of his joints and an injury to his right flank.
The heart in the sand-etched around the three-year-old showed how close members of the public had been to him.
Now wildlife experts are urging the public to keep their distance.
Tamara Cooper, of the seal sanctuary, said that, while they did not think it was the case for Curry, “getting too close to a pup can result in abandonment by the mother, who may be watching from the water”.
